This little machine is great. I walked out my back door and in 2 minutes time found 65 cents. It is very easy to use. Had it figured out after reading the manual one time. I wish I would have known about this machine before I bought the bounty hunter pioneer 202 for my daughter in march. Oh well she will use the ace 250 when we go out together. It's lighter and easier to use then the bounty anyways. The ace250 is a great MD and I would recomend it to anyone.

thats pretty much how everone feels about the 250. it is a remarkable machine for the $.

I've had my ACE 250 a couple of months and so far I have found few faults. One thing mine does that I am tryoing to figure out if it has a problem is...... When I hit a target and start to dig, I lay my ACE on the ground while I dig. If I need to go back over the hole to see if the target is still in the hole, it seems to go to sleep momentarily. Sometimes it takes a dozen or so passes over the hole to get it to register at all as if it were temporatily asleep! Also, wkhen I get a "hit" on a target it immediately disappears on the LCD screen and you have to be looking directly at it at all times or you will miss the target response. It would be better for me if the registered hit would stay on the screen momentarily...Do you get my meaning? It's hard to explain. JIM

Hi Jim, I agree with you on this. I wish it displayed the icons for a minute or two longer. It seems almost easier no to look at the screen and just dig all signals, but I purchased this machine for its ID breakdown. It ain't perfect but close!!!

I just got mine yesterday. Considering all the glowing reviews I have seen I was surprised at its somewhat odd behavior. In coin mode it seems to ping eratically all over my yard, even though most of the stuff it pings on are indicated as trash. Why does it ping on trash if it is in coin mode? Sometimes it pings so randomly it seems that it is receiving signals from outer space. It pings often and then I scan again and there is nothing. It almost seems like it is defective. The pinpoint mode seems to some times work and other times do nothing. Sometimes I have to press the button again to get it to work. I wonder if this is what Jim is talking about in terms of temporary "sleep"? Also it works differently depending on how fast your are moving the head. Sometimes it pings only going left to right or the other way around. Can anyone give my an opinion of what I am saying?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike, Mega has a point there. I never run mine at more than 5 or 6 bars sens. If it pings in one direction and not the other it is usually trash. Watch the top cursor when it does this cause it will dance around. When you find a coin it is very stable and locks on ID very well(most of the time) ;D

I've found that if you just want coins you need to set the discrimination to remove everything from the nickel all the way to the dime and set the sensitivity to about 3 to 4 bars. You will still pick up pennies even though it's showing them discriminated out. A penny and a dime will sound just alike at this setting. At this setting I will pick up some trah usually small pull tabs being shown as a nickel but you won't get all those annoying tones in between a nickel and a dime. At least that's how mine works. hey mike, these guys are right,if you are getting a lot of false signals lower your sensitivity until the machine behaves more normally.also if you sweep over a target and it pings in one direction but not the other, usually it means it is a trash target.it could also mean that you have found a coin that is laying on its side or is deep and it is hard for your machine to read it. try scanning from a few different directions to see if you can get a stronger signal.as far as pinpointing goes..when you find a target you want to pinpoint, move the coil to the side about 7 inches or so. then slowly move the coil over the target while holding the pinpoint button. when the signal strength is strongest, slowly pull the coil back towards yourself until the signal just drops out. the target should be right at the top inside loop of your coil. practice this techniche with coins on the surface until you get it down.the ace250 is a great machine but it is quirky and will take a few hours of detecting to figure out what it is trying to tell you. i think the same could probably be said about all detectors. good luck and let us know how you make out.

Hi MIKE If you pickup the copy of "THE GARRETT SEARCHER" MARCH 2005 pg 10 you may find some answers to your problems. ARCOM

I tried this tip from another forum and it worked great on my 250. The coil is so sensitive it picks up the cable wrapped around the lower stem. I took my cable from the coil and ran it straight not coiled against the lower shaft about a foot up and taped it in place, then wrapped the cable around the upper shaft. This made a major difference if the eratic bings. Good Luck

Good tip Midus. :)

I use velcro on mine so i can switch coils easy. Making sure the cable doesnt move around will definitely cut down on falsing.

Thanks everyone for the fast and helpful advice. I had been using the thing right "out of the box" and it was set at 6 bars out of 8 sensitivity, so tonight with your advice I turned it down to 4 or 5 and that was better. I also took Jim's advice and turned off the notches at nickel and penny. It was much quieter and I pulled up no ferrous metal. Still some random pinging in parts of my lawn and I did see some other posts that mention this. I will also try the cable trick. I found some misc brass and aluminum things and then my big find, some Navy/Marines aviator wings!! Gold plated front and they cleaned up like new (from the front). Found them right in my front yard. So I am going up the learning curve but not too far up yet.

Jim, in another thread you mention the "halo" effect of shallow coins. Can you explain that?

My last detector was 29 years ago, a Whites hip mount. I don't remember the model. It took 14 AA batteries!! No kidding. And I mostly found pull tabs and junk with it. This thing is a lot different! Now I just need to find somewhere with more coins!
