Hi,

I discovered this triangle shaped cave with a carving in the North Georgia Mountains (Southern Appalachian Mountain Range). I am currently working on the idea that this is Native American due to the area. Possible tribe marker or grave marker? Any information into the meaning is appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. The blue shiny thing at the bottom of the cave entrance photo is my dog.

This is a closer photo. You can zoom in on these photos as well. Very good detail.

That is pretty cool i see the profiles one looks like a cougar and another a human face just natural rock formations though in my humble opinion have you been in the cave?

My research so far has lead me to old stories of how the Native Americans belonged to tribes within a larger nation. Each tribe had an animal name such as a bobcat tribe, deer tribe, bird tribe, etc. A tribe marker may have the chief or brave along with what tribe they belonged too. A marker may also have if they were a good hunter and of which animals and things of this nature. A kind of story of the tribe or of a particular person.

In North Ga and here on the border in Tennessee there have been several cases were natives used them as burial places. Sometimes just placed in a crack. You are in the cave belt area so there are thousands of such caves just like that one. Some lead to more others just a shelter or maybe not used at all. They did not use grave markers other than stacked stones and any petroglyphs are rare . Most over hang shelters used are pretty large and were used during the nut harvest.
Hope this helps as I spent years exploring literally hundreds. The best ones are around the rims of mountains or over looking water and springs. Ancient water sources.

Oh yeah welcome to T-Net !

Robmill238, sorry to say but those are natural formations and not carvings of any kind. The "cave" looks more like just a crag in the rock and not an actual cave and way to small for any type of occupation.

Never heard of a dog described as a "blue shiny thing". Made my day. Don't know anything about caves except monsters can be in them.
