Help !! Any ideas on this?
I agree 4-H,Aspens have a thin bark almost a skin.I have seen groves that had actual calanders carved in them that mainly sheepherders or hunters carved yearly updates. They also carved very detailed pictures of mostly women(I guess it does get pretty lonely out there)I would agree as well that that carving probably isnt that old as the older ones have a swelled look to the marks.4-H said:Looks Aspen to me. Birch has layers that can almost be pulled of in sheets. That carving is not that old. My wife and I while hiking in the Rocky Mountains see all kinds of modern carvings in trees like these. I have no idea what it is though...What location?? State land? fed land? Indian?

thanks for the correction i was just guessing. i was thinking of the mountain ones that don't seem to make it longkuger said:I have to disagree with your age assumption of Aspens, they can live to be well over 100 years old. There have also been documented carvings in live ones dates much older than that.
