Treasures of Alexander

Well for starters, what about Alexander's friend Harpalus, who absconded with a huge sum of gold and silver from the captured treasury of Persia, fled to Athens where he tricked the folks and then on to Crete where he was murdered - his lieutenants and a whole body of hired mercenaries sailed off to Kyrene where they attempted to set up their own state. What became of all that booty?

Well we know that those mercenaries ended up failing due to Ptolemy intervening, but that massive treasure just didn't seem to turn up in Alexandria nor in Kyrene. If the Gaetulians had nipped it, one would think this would have turned up at some later point such as the Muslim conquest. Plus we know that the mercenaries had ships - good ships capable of crossing the Mediterranean. I would not cross this one off yet amigo.

Sounds like you have set yourself up a fascinating project here William and I am looking forward to hearing more about it! Oro and Mrs Oro are great at research when it comes to stuff like this so I am sure Oro will pose some intriguing questions to you and perhaps make you think of other possibilities in your search. Best of luck to you and I do hope you find what you are looking for!

It appears you have the motivation, facilities and training to do some sound research. I'm looking forward to your posts. I've subscribed to the thread.

Thanks for sharing whatever you learn.

Interesting so far amigo - have you included on your list (of treasures of Alexander) the tomb of Alexander too? There are some folks who are claiming that it can be found even today.
