This is long and dull.? Don't read it.? That is, unless, you enjoyed my first two outings.? This is my third, and has been brought to you as requested by Nana.? Blame her.
After several weeks and several abortive attempts to get out and detect again, I finally set the day. Tuesday morning.? I resolved to go detecting come hell or high water, and find something on Tuesday morning.
I told my girlfriend, who prompty informed me that I needed to spend Tuesday morning with her, or else.
Wednesday morning.? I resolved to go detecting come hell or high water, and find something on Wednesday morning.
6am. Wednesday.? My alarm went off, and I shook off the sleep and dragged myself out of bed.? I was out the door and 6:45, and headed to the elevator of my charming and historic Los Angeles apartment building, where I made my first discovery of the day.? Resting on top of the rail along the back of the elevator was a glass pipe wrapped in a napkin and accompanied by a cheap lighter.? I have seen a few of these in my time as a patrol officer.? A quick whiff told me "rock cocaine."? I booked it as evidence in the dumpster on the way out.? Ah, the City of Angels.? Somebody somewhere is crying at the loss of that pipe.
I got some coffee from the 7-11, and headed toward the beach.? I drove south down Pacific Coast Highway, figuring on a nice drive down to a likely spot. I arrived at Sunset Beach, and gathered my gear from the car.? I followed an attractive female surfer from the parking lot to the beach.? On arrival at the waterline, I was stunned -? it was littered with garbage.? Not just a little, but like someone had opened a large bag and dumped it every five feet.? A lot of it looked metallic, so I didn't bother taking out the ol' ACE.
I figured that there might be something interesting washed up in all this refuse, so I started walking, nudging stuff with my foot if it looked interesting.? The first item I took an interest in was something I could not identify.? At first, I thought it was a jellyfish.? Clear, and gelatinous.? I nudged it, and it rolled over a bit.? It appeared to have six legs.? I thought perhaps an octopus that lost a couple, but I dunno.? Never seen a transparent octopus.? I moved on.
I found a metal lighter before long.? Nothing special.? A cheapie.? Says DjEEP on the side.? I found a Blockbuster card.? I found a tennis ball.? I found a blue hard hat.? I found an empty briefcase.? I found a tire.? I found a ballet slipper.? I found pieces of what appeared to have been a cabin cruiser.? Wonder what happened to it.? Found some nice shells.? Found myself in an area marked "Restricted. Do Not Enter. No Photography."? Whoops.? Apparently, the Naval Weapons Station does not welcome casual passers-by. I made my way back to the car, lest I be confused with Al Qaeda and be detained pending the apocalypse.
I figured Corona del Mar in Newport Beach (Sailing Through a Century) might be a good spot.? I remembered going there on field trips to see tide pools and whatnot as a child.? Unfortunately, I didn't retain knowledge of how to get there, and ended up in San Clemente (The Spanish Village by the Sea).? I knew that was too far.? I doubled back, and ended up in San Juan Capistrano (Preserving the Past, to Enhance the Future).? Another field trip, the old Spanish mission there.? What the heck.? I stopped by.? Walked the grounds.? Established in 1776.? How I would have loved to detect there.? But it was not to be. I did take a nice picture with my phone of the ruins of the Great Stone Church, which collapsed in an earthquake in 1812 during mass, killing 42 indians.? Bummer.? Picture attached.
I left Capistrano, and headed to the Orange County Animal Shelter.? I had promised my girfriend a cat.? I also wanted to see if there might be a digging partner there.? The cats were not interested in digging, and were a motley lot.? A couple of the dogs claimed to be accomplished diggers, and I have no reason to doubt that.? But I could see they lacked focus, and would likely not be dedicated to my objectives.? I left the shelter, and moved on to the park where I had previously made my best discovery with my ACE, a souvenir copper token.
I arrived at Parque del Arroyo Verde in the lovely city of Placentia (A Pleasant Place), and made my way to the woodchips.? The park was deserted.? I began my search near the swingset, and to my surprise, my ACE went nuts!? It told me gold!? I have learned not to believe my ACE, not matter how convincing its arguments are.? But I sorted through the chips, and there it was - a shiny gold-colored charm shaped like an angel with three small clear gemstones!? Is it gold? Are they diamonds?? I dunno.? I will choose to believe it is, and they are, and not seek proof otherwise.
I continued to search, and found some ancient coins, dating back as far as 1971.? 33 cents total, which in today's value, would probably be around 33 cents.? By the jungle gym, I found a child's ring with a blue flower on it.? No marks, must have been too valuable to mar with tacky numbers or letters.? I also found an eyelet from either a childs shoe, or possibly the smallest sail of the legenday sunken Spanish galleon "Perro Perdido" that I just made up, known to have been lost in the area.? The last find of the day was a small copper tag with markings unlike any language I am familiar with.? I will check around.? Satisfied, I went home.
So, I finally had a successful day.? Pending permission from my keeper (girlfriend), perhaps I'll have another at some point.
Turns out my scanner/printer will not scan without ink.? Whatever.? No pictures of the loot.? Just the ruins.
