Here's a question brought up by our friend Treasureguide on The Treasure Beaches Report From Florida's Treasure Coast. Metal Detecting For You.

"The shipwreck beaches in Indian River County were all closed this morning, from Amber Sands down through Turtle Trail. It was only the wreck beaches that were closed. Funny, isn't it?

There were cars waiting at all of those beach accesses this morning, including Wabasso etc., waiting for the access to open.

A lot of people ended up going to the beach at the state park at Sebastian because they couldn't get in anywhere else. I talked to locals as well as people that drove a long while to visit the wreck beaches and they weren't happy about it. What a shame!

The story I hear is that the wreck beaches are closed so one person who works for the county can detect it himself. I find it hard to believe that the county would allow that. I'd like to find out for sure so I can put the rumor to rest. If you can have details on the real story, let me know."

This guy is out there every day checking out the beaches and giving the best advice any of us could ever hope to get on a number of topics. If he feels something is up, then you can bet your bottom dollar, something is!

Anybody out there know something the rest of us don't know? If, so I'll pass it on...

I read the same and thought the beaches or the beach accesses?

The county might own the accesses but they don't own the beach- WE do!

Like all those gates and signs "So and So "private beach"" HAH I'll walk 6 miles to get to your private beach and put my thong on! lol

Is there any access close to Sandy Point? I can't find the old one and the closest I think is about 2 miles away. Thank-you "The Moorings"

Are there any accesses that aren't at wrecks?
I can't think of any that aren't...so it would close off all the wrecks.

Man we need a total overhaul of all government!!!

I know it's frustrating seeing the accesses closed and it is becoming more frequent, some closed before much of any erosion was occuring. I for one who has lived here since 1989 am about DONE with our local governent making these decisions in an effort to "protect the public" Here is something to mull over city counsel, why not leave the accesses open, promote treasure hunting, and protect us by having the police patrol the parking areas and all along A1-A and stop all the smash and grabs by the F'ing loser criminals...and give the beaches back to the fricking public that put your ass in that seat you sit on.
That is how to really protect us deter the criminal not the public.

A quote from Rpoesfish on Treasureworks:

"I drove from Wabasso to Indialantic on Saturday on A1A and noticed just what Tommy brought up...Gates all closed till you cross the Inlet bridge into Brevard County and every Brevard County park was open. The State Park on the N side was closed up tight with State Park and FWC employees sitting in front of the gate @ 10AM. Most of the Brevard parks don't have gates to close.
I would conclude that IR County has some reason to restrict access. If it were a public safety issue, Brevard County would have the same exposure to liability as Indian River County. There's no significant difference in beaches, currents, (in)ability of citizens to swim, etc.
Nice of them to provide security for the State and it's lessee. They must feel that they can't trust those citizens that pay taxes to "renourish" those beaches to have access to public property.
I'm going to stop now before a rant appears.

ill put my two cents worth. I had been flying out from Utah to the Treasure Coast to Metal detect thanks to Delta sky miles that my company give me as a bonus for meeting my quotas. I only fly out when there is a storm or hurricane. Something to move the sand to make it worth the trip. I rent a car, stay in a hotel, eat at restaurants which is an expense but money that Florida businesses get.
All I can say is that I have given up going to Florida, because of the beach closures when I have gone. Its really frustrating. I really I cant understand Florida and their thinking when it comes to metal detecting. Safety is one thing but their logic is typical government BS. Heaven forbid if hard working people want to take time off and enjoy their time on the beach in hopes of maybe finding something great! I don't know what can be done to tell the Government that this is America, the land of the free and opportunity to those that take the time to seek it. Yes we need to respect the land, and should treat it so future generations can enjoy it but come on..... its a beach that is changing every day by mother nature. What is it hurting having people like us taking time out to enjoy the beach, the thrill of finding something, and time with our friends, or family, or just the solitude of being by your self metal detecting on the beach!

I drove up from miami, and spent the last six day's a few miles north of the inlet. We hit the beaches hard from friday night starting at 8 p.m. and taking a nap only too wake up and do it again. The beach access' were closed way south. We ended up being dropped off in the weeeeee hours of the morning, and in the afternoon. Then being picked up at a pre-determined location (sometimes at the weeeeee hours in the morning) which worked very well. Wabasso beach access was open today(sunday). We drove south on a1a checking out sea grape, and turtle trail ---- which were closed. So we ended up going back to CR510 getting dropped off, and working our way south to the pick up spot - which we had 7 hours to get their. Several people on the beach way south of disney. The waves hit the dunes so hard in that area is was a sight to be seen. I have not seen the natural dune erode since 2004. All the trucked in sand is gone. It is a nice cut with a bit of a slope, I spoke with some local old tan female lizards, and they said "lots of erosion - all the new sand is gone - it's a shame" I about jumped into the rough surf, and wanted to swim to the islands(the bahamas, but with luck would end up in bermuda) Lots of good targets for those who made the walk or got dropped off in the area.
She will be sanding in the beaches herself the next day or two. The gittin was good this weekend.
Thank you Sandy!!!

Fortune favors the bold!
So no one protested your presence even though the beach access gates were locked?

We went by in the late morning and there were cars lined up on the side of A1A. The gates were still locked. We decided to join the crowd. While we were unloading the police drove by and did not stop. It was kind of ridiculus that the gates were locked.

No one protested. There were many people on the beach. Like I said wabasso beach access was open - the park at the end of CR510. We already new where we wanted to go - ended up taking a few hits from waves when we got the the narrow spots, but it paid off.
Seagrape and turtle trail were closed because of the 10ft cut one had to climb down, or up.

Did anyone have any luck finding anything? Don't want details... Just wanna' see some cool shipwreck goodies... Need my "fix"... Going through gold fever "withdrawals"...

In lieu of a rant, I offer this news article from the TC Palm newspaperHurricane Sandy causes $12M of beach erosion in Vero Beach, Indian River County » TCPalm.com describing the 12+ million dollars in damage done to area beaches. It includes this:
"Much of the damage, estimated at $7.4 million, took place in the 6.6-mile stretch of beach that recently underwent a $15.5 million restoration project, known as Sector 3. The restoration project, between northern John's Island and the Seaview community, wrapped up around April 1.
7.4 million dollars and it lasted 6 months.
Gee.
Go vote for smarter people than the ones we elected last time.

I am not a water nor beach hunter. But as I see it (if it is true) that only one county worker was allowed to hunt the shipwreck beaches, that just maybe it was an ar-KEELHAUL-ogist. Just my slant on this thread........NGE

Hangingfor8... I don't know what you mean by "following Trez" and "chasing after a ballast stone" but yes, I did meet Scott at Corrigans one morning, yes we do know many of the same hunting spots so we did head in the same directions (along with many other beach hunters), and yes we did spot a small ballast stone there at the same time and he picked it up (I have so many of those dang things and have nothing to do with them). We also are acquainted with some of the same people in treasure hunting and I enjoyed speaking with Trez... Why do you ask?
