Found this Saturday near an old cellar hole. It is copper but thinner than an LC. It is seriously corroded but has a few minor details but I don't have a clue what it is. I can see reeding on both sides. What I call the reverse side, I can see an "A" followed by a dot followed by ""18". This is above the bottom center of a wreath (where the 2 branches cross).
On the obverse, I see some signs of of text following the inside curve of the reeding.

Any thoughts??

Thanks all!

Are you sure it's not...

An 1812 period military button with eagle design and what you see on the other side is part of the backmark? That's my initial feeling, but little to go on. How clear is the "18" ? It's pretty easy to find corrosion that resembles numbers.

I do see the 18... what about Mexican copper, or counterfeit silver.

It looks like a crude 1852... thinking counterfeit.

I do not see a tell-tale sign of a shank base, but it is so trashed. Do you hav picture of he button?

Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud and have gone beyond the button idea. I think I see an 1852 date, but sure is sloppy.

Yeah, it was on a cart road between the cellar hole and a nearby pond. The ground was hard packed and gravelly.

The 1852 date is a possiblity. I can see what looks like the lower half (the hook) of what would be the 5.

I'm trying to find an image of a mexican copper. Not familiar with it.

I was just thinking a Spanish or Mexican coin from the mid. 1800s might have an edge design like that. I wouldn't concentrate much effort on that, at this point I have no idea and could be almost anything. It's definitely not one that is jumping out at me.

Could be a CW era store card also.
