This past weekend was really the first time I've gotten out and detected for a full day and with a pin pointer (GPP).

The GPP makes things so much nicer, no more digging a hole and saying heck, i can't find anything! If you're a new to this, just get a pin pointer--now.

My yard is pretty trashy, my parents farm is worse, but a friends yard was horrid. They lost 3 rings several years ago and i tried to help find them, they "said" they've got to be in this 10x10 section.. ok.
Get there and find out they've graded the yard with a tractor after tearing down the pool/deck. And the trash was ridiculous! You couldn't even set the GPP down ANYWHERE without it going nuts. I actually literally found a needle! What I did learn is how fast the goldbug pro is, i felt like i was playing pac-man in this yard. Needless to say after an hour i didn't find the rings, maybe i'll try again one day. Any tips for sites like this? I have an 11" DD coil, so i know the 5" would help but not sure it would help enough.

The rest of the day i searched an old church yard. The church was moved ~50yrds to its current location sometime pre 1890 but i don't know when it was built originally. Found my first coins... 2001!! :)

I also found a slab of iron 5" x 12" by 1/2" thick and under it, as if on purpose, was a key ring with a dozen or so keys! one of which was an old skeleton key. Kinda cool. I found other iron trash, an axe blade, tractor parts, etc, even though i was mostly in disc mode set at 39. I cool tie clip and a little toy key.

Congrats on your finds!

good finds, especially for being new to the sport.Trash can be very frustrating, but in my opinion that is the best way to learn your machine.try to concentrate on one sound at a time. If them rings are there you will eventually find them.good luck in the future.joe

I've had the same experience, alas, to the point where I think it would be easier to set up a screen and just use a shovel.

I have an older gold bug, and I'm doubtful that one could learn much about it by endlessly digging trash (other than what trash sounds like). Especially when coupled with notions like, dig everything, or pull tabs sound like gold.

A test bed might be more helpful than endlessly digging junk. I've been too impatient to go to the trouble of doing that, but I'm told it's worth the effort.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I've heard the same about a test bed, maybe I'll do that when it warms up
