I located what I believe is a trash pit from the mid 19th century. I have full permission to dig, and I am having a blast.
I’ll share some background. There are 10 acres, mostly woods, and I have been detecting there for more than a year. The land belongs to a family member. Most of my finds before this have been Civil War related, but the land was occupied from the late 1700’s. There is a small graveyard on the property with gravestones from the mid 1800s. The main house sits on the adjacent lot, about 100 yards from my pit, and was built in 1807. The pit is in a field between the graves and the house. The areas in the field around where I found the pit are very trashy. It is close to a main road, and there were multiple burn piles close by within the past 20 years. I had not previously had much success detecting in this area of the property.
After some heavy rain a few weeks back, I wanted to detect an area in the field where a lot of washout had happened, thinking maybe some coins got washed down with the small rocks and stuff. My Teknetiks T2 was so noisy, I turned up discrimation and decided to dig the first high pitch signal that sounded consistent. I dug down to the target, which ended up being a broken horse shoe 7-8 inches down, but I pulled several square nails and some broken pottery out of the small hole. There were no modern nails or trash. I didn’t have much time that day so I filled in the hole and noted the spot.
A few days later I came back to the spot and started to dig some more. Long story short I’ve been back to dig several times in the past two weeks, and I’m still looking for the extents of the pit. I am going slow and sifting everything (or stockpiling to sift later) and feel very lucky and blessed to have the chance to dig up this history.
Some of the finds so far include:
* 1850 large cent in excellent condition
* clay pipe with “Peter” inscribed and other makers marks, 20-30 pieces
* over 20 buttons made of all different material
* fork with antler handle still in tact
* wide variety of broken pottery, glasses, bottles
* wooden tooth brush
* miniature horse shoe
* many osyter shells and animal bones
* possible indian artifact
