I've been saving cans cuz my wife and I drink like 10 Diet Cokes a day. I also enter codes from the boxes and bottle caps on MyCokeRewards.com. Every time I save up 2000 points, I buy a $50 Nike giftcard with them and sell it on eBay. I sell the cans 1-2 times a year. I figure I can get 3 Silver Eagles a year for free. And alum is only worth 50 cents/pound here. If I lived in one of those Socialist states (Hawaii, California, or Oregon) where they have a special surcharge tax on recyclables, I could get like 5 cents a can. That's an ounce of silver for every 700 cans. Anybody do the same?

I do the same thing! My colleagues at work know I do it and they will bring me their cans, glass and plastic bottles, so I can take them to the recycling center and get my cash. One year (of collecting EVERYONE'S recycling) got me just shy of $400.00. I spent all of that money on my wife for Christmas!

Nowadays I get between $5-$10 every few weeks and that cash goes into a small glass jar in my nightstand. Once I get enough cash in there I will either buy another ASE to complete my collection or I will get my wife something nice!!!

Free money just for a little recycling never hurts!

I think that's a great idea. I scrap out copper and alum from time to time. Mich has a 10 cent return on cans and bottles, and some have made a career out of scouring the ditches of roads and highways looking for returnables.

I save all the cans from work and buy silver with it. I also pick up some of the scrap copper that gets dropped. Its not much, comes out to about $15 every 3 months but its free silver.

i don't know this for a fact, but don't you pay "extra" per can in the states that pay you 5 cents to recycle your cans?

yep. I've lived in states that have it and states that don't. there is a deposit charge that you pay when you buy the soda or beer. so 30c extra per six pack. I prefer the states that have it. First of all you can get that whole price back just by returning the bottles once every few months. Secondly you can profit, by collecting bottles of everyone that's too lazy to bring them back. Also for things like scouts, bottle drives are incredibly profitable fundraisers. In states that have the 5c fee, you don't find any broken bottles on the city streets like you do in states that don't, since everyone and their brother wants that 5c

here in Michigan the bottle and can deposit is 10 cents but I still see broken bottles and beer cans. Beggars have decided it is more profitable to sit at the highway off ramps with signs than it is to collect bottles and cans.

I recycle my cans in CA, i just take the slip into the grocery store and buy food or beer. You get your 5 cent deposit back per can or bottle, 10 cents for the 1/2 and 1 gallon OJ jugs, or you can weigh in bulk and get about 1.10 lb alum, sometimes i do that if the line is really long.

Smart man, I acutally do Buy silver ( if its low) With my Clad finds at the end of the year, I have been saving all the Copper and Brass for the same thing too. I dont drink sodas or i would totally be saving Cans. I started grabbing cans i found last year, but after getting pulled over with 20 crushed beer cans in the back of my VW, Sorta keeps me away from that now

I live in Hawaii and just started doing this.

God I'm glad I don't stack cans or need to as I don't drink sodas or beer, so my question is; is alumnimum a Precious Metal or is the contents special? I think I answered my own question.
If I drank 10 cokes a day and if I stopped doing that, then I coud buy an oz of Silver a lot faster than waiting a year. Not knowing the price of a six pack of sodas, but common sense would dictact Stop drinking sodas and use the money to buy Silver sooner when you can afford it and you'll be a lot Healthier and Wealthier. LMAO
