I found this in the creek last evening. I think it might be a trade blank but it is pretty big. It has edgework all the way around it and the underside is slightly concave in the center. Is it a trade blank or just a humongous scraper? Thanks in advance for any help.

The material selected does not appear to be able to fracture in a nice concoidal pattern as evidenced by the fractures ending too short. I believe that they gave it their best shot but abandoned the project. They were masters at reading flint/chert and would not spend a lot of time on something that would produce a tool that was not useful. Still interesting find.

Thank you, Rege. I'm going to have a really huge rock garden, lol.

I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it sure is an interesting piece of material. It looks like it's full of crystal and other inclusions, I would have brought it home too.

I agree and think Rege-Pa said it very well. Nice find a good one for the garden Bluesy.

Thank you Thirty7 and TnMountains.

Thirty7, I'm glad you would have taken it home, too. Maybe that means I'm getting closer to finding something decent. :D I have a hard time finding things in the creek here. After the first 30 minutes or so, I get a little overloaded - there is a LOT of gravel here and it all starts to look the same. Oh, and I don't know if this one has crystal in it but the inclusions sparkle in the sunlight.

Thanks again!

The promising thing about your creek is that your finding some worked pieces of flint / chert in it. I rarely find worked pieces in creeks. Today I walked a good mile of a creek with sites on both sides and found nothing but a snapping turtle shell, and some raw slabs of greenstone. I think it's only a matter of time before you find something that'll make your day in that creek,. good luck, 37

Thank you, Thirty7. There is a ton of worked flint there but a lot of it is broken or questionable from being tumbled so much during the rainy seasons. I'm hoping for a sure thing one of these days and I'm thinking that every hunt brings me a little bit closer. :D
