We have had some great weather here last week, so I was tipped off that I should be check the beaches. Today I gave it a go. windy overcast and winds 15-20 from the northeast. total for four targets I am using a BH tracker IV, setting, as follows sensitivity set about 12 oclock, Discrim. about the same. I was hunting in the ALL METAL mode, when I toggled to tone mode the got lower or were gone so I dug them all,, two fine looking IBC bottle caps, one Pepsi can, and this treasure ! ENJOY !! it must have metal pins in the joints it was down about 4" not sure what I will do with it , but a find is a find !

I am very new to this sport/hobby,, and enjoy it very much ! I am hoping someone can review how I have the machine set and offer any tips and or pointers!

Thanks in advance ! Bo

I would set the sensitivity at full throttle. All the way clockwise unless it got noisy, then slowly back off till it shuts up. If you can turn it all the way clockwise without noise, great.

If it were me, as far as discrimination, I would throw a nickel on the ground, turn the DISC all the way clockwise, and sweep the nickel while slowly turning the DISC knob counter clockwise. The moment you hear the nickel being picked up by the detector, mark that spot on the DISC knob with nail polish or a scratch. With DISC set there, you will be able to pick up all coins and most jewelry. Without a notch feature, you still will pick up bottle caps, tabs and cans. But you eliminate iron and foil junk.

If you turn the DISC full clockwise, you will eliminate the bottle caps (not all), pull tabs, but not cans as cans can ID as silver.

The fact is, you have an inexpensive beep and dig detector. It beeps, you dig. You only have a analog disc circuit to help eliminate iron junk. Most detectorists only use the DISC feature to eliminate iron. The reason for spending more money on a detector is to get the ability to go a bit deeper and having better control of what's in the ground.

Thanks Phantasman,, seem this learning curve is a bit slow for me anyways I appreciate all the help

No problem. By the way, the meter is pretty much useless. It does give an idea for depth (strength of signal), but not a very accurate one. Use your ears. A tab or cap could have some slight static in the sound where a coin always sounds pure. But even then, you may miss some jewelry, especially gold chains, etc.

First off, I STRONGLY urge you to please read the manual all the way through and do the air tests as described in the manual. The air tests will teach you what the different tones mean.

That alone will teach you at least half of what you need to know to understand what the machine is telling you. Once you get out and practice with it you'll learn it's language. The T4 only has two basic tones which makes it easy to learn.

Eventually you'll begin to intuitively know what to dig and what not to dig based on the tones.

Oh, and forget about the meter; it's basically useless. Just pay close attention to those tones and you'll do fine.
You can hunt in all metal mode but you have to be willing to dig everything.

I typically ran mine in tone mode with the disc around 11-12 O'clock. Once you get around 12- 1 O'clock you'll knock out the pull tabs but you'll also disc out the smaller gold and pass right over it if it's there. If you want to dig gold you just have to be willing to dig the trash regardless of what detector you have.

Oh and don't let anyone tell you the T4 won't find treasure because it will. I found gold and silver jewelry with mine and a nice little bunch of silver coins. There was also lots of trash but that comes with the hobby.
I hope this helps a bit.
Good luck and HH...
