I bet he was in a bind! Lots of time used to seat that bullet when someone is shooting at you. I've found some like that too but mostly ones where the ramrod left a mark on the end. He had been on the line too long and was needing to clean his rifle...d2

d2, post some pictures off some of your relics I for one would like to see anything you have,

That is a cool star based bullet. I do not have one amongst my bullets. I always check the base of bullets when I find one for markings.

I am behind at the shop and I will try and sit down this evening and post some stuff...d2

Nice find. They don't exactly grow on trees here in Va but we find the star base time to time. I've seen those deep ram rod marks before and always wondered if the rifle was dirty or were they trying to say.. shove a 54 cal. into a 52 gun? Someone here will add I'm sure. I have read that some soldiers thought Williams Cleaners were not as accurate and would only use them as last resort; if that is true there were plenty of "last resorts" going on because I find lots of them. The fall of Petersburg was just before Appomattox so I guess it was the time for last resorts. What a terrible time in our history.

looks like it was double loaded on top of another bullet and fired.
