Tough hunting in OH - Long road trip

Was heading to a job site in OH so I laid out a bunch of banks starting a little SW of Cleavland and headed south from there weaving back and forth. I laid out approx 54 bank from there to my final destination. I avoided the bigger towns/cities and focus on the small towns and country areas so they are a little fewer and farther between. The path with 54 points totaled to 403 miles and 9hrs of driving!

I got to the first bank, my start point, at 10:30am and went bank to bank marking off and punching the next target into the Infiniti at every stop. I now just give up at 4pm on banks because it's hit or miss if they are open after that. Enough of them close at 4pm that I just pack it up at 4. When 4pm rolled around I had hit 25 banks (because 2 didn't exist anymore) and collected approx $1200 in halves. I only left halves 'on the table' at one bank because they had a clear bag with $700 in the valt. I 'sampled' $200 of it in the car and there wasn't 1 silver so I left w/o going back in for the rest. It was early on and I had only brought a little over $2K on hand so I didn't want to blow it all early on someones dumps and didn't want to hit an ATM and pay fees.

Twice I went to banks that were about 10 miles apart and hit the same dumps with marked wrappers. It's a frustrating feeling to find a bank with $300 in the valt, tell them that you'll take them all and then get handed 30 rolls with "X"s on them or Pink and Purple marker rings around them. It's even more frustrating to get 20 min down the road and have it happen AGAIN with the same rolls lol. :tongue3:

Anyway, completed about half of my laid out banks so far and it wasn't a complete skunk but I would say it was pretty tuff hunting! ALL of my finds came from one bank that had 6 rolls/$60 in halves. Those 6 rolls gave me 10 - 40%'s. If all goes as planned, I will be headed back home in a few days and will be trying to hit the other 25 banks when I leave. I will be able to start at 9am and hopefully get them all in by 4pm, then continue home. The plus side is that I get paid to do a road trip and CRH and get my mileage/gas paid for :hello2: Hopefully I'll have better luck on the second half...I'll post back!

Thank god your not paying the gas.

That's for sure, I would never even consider doing it if I did. The G37x isn't all that great on gas while weaving up and down the country roads either lol. My last road trip was a few weeks ago while in Kansas City, I hit about 30 - 40's and a couple 90s after going to about 40 banks. Hoping I can do better with this one, not looking great so far but it only takes one good bank to really turn it around. I'm holding out hope :laughing9:

Re: Tough hunting in OH

Do u call ahead or just go to them all? I always call ahead... Saves time. I wish I got $ for gas! That would be sweet!

Nope, I just start plowing through them! I figure you never know what you might find if you show up in person. I have gotten offered Ike's, asked for anything else interesting and several times, the person I ask first thinks they don't have any until another girl pops her head up and says she has some. I think in the long run you will definitely miss some good hits by calling only. That and some tellers could just care less and say no be done with you on the phone. So, I hit them all. Especially since I'm getting paid for my time and not paying for the gas. I might take a different approach if that weren't the case though...

Not a good idea to talk about work footing the gas bill for your hobby. Companies are internet savy, do yourself a favor and keep it to yourself, just saying.

:laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9: Thanks for the concern, but don't worry yourself too much! You have no idea what my 'setup' is, so don't pretend to or bother telling me what I should and shouldn't do. I have NOTHING to worry about, 'just saying'. :icon_thumleft:

7 Banks around town after finishing up today.

$67 in halves - 4 CWR's & the rest from the tills
$18 in Ike's

Silver = Complete Skunk!

Going hard tomorrow before I head the rest of the way home. Going to be at the first bank by 9am and going solid till 4pm hitting as many as possible. Plotted on the map are 42 banks with a route that = 257 miles headed in the general direction of "home". Hope I can make up for my poor showing in OH so far.

32 banks so far with only (10) - 40% er's! Should be able to get the total to over 60 OH banks tomorrow...

Keep at it. "It's out there for the finding...." Don't give up.
Best of luck tomorrow
I'm rooting for ya!

Hey, Tony from Canton here. Avoid Canton and especially Hartville. Every bank in hartville will have $1000 in halves, all will be skunked by yours truly. Just saving you some time :icon_thumright:

haha, thanks for the heads up Tony! My route actually goes up past Canton about 20 miles to the west and ends about 8 miles west of Hartville next to 77 but I highly doubt I'll have enough time to make it up that high before the banks start closing.

I'll be coming back again next week sometime and will be making some more 'routes' to hit. I'll just avoid Canton altogether if that is your stomping ground. Let me know if there are areas you like to hit up or do short road trips too. I can easily make my 'routes' anywhere and if I can avoid stepping on someone's feet I will gladly do so. There are a million banks and I can just as easily stop in a different area along the way :icon_thumleft:

No problem, I was just warning. I usually order boxes and dump all over hartville, and I usually drive through North Canton when Im dumping and ask for CWRS. Never really hit the city of canton though, just north canton. Good luck, glad there is another treasurenet person in ohio!

Wow it was a painful day! Having a really bad streak in OH! Today seemed like slow going. At the first bank at 9am and went till 4pm. I covered 201 miles and hit 22 banks (4 were either not were it said they were and or no longer in business).

Collected $565 in halves. Several were dumps and I did get one collection! 8 rolls of nothing but Bicentennials in poor condition :laughing9:

That brings the total to 54 banks collecting almost $1800 in halves with only ONE bank that produced 10 - 40%'ers from 6 rolls. Definitely tough in OH but I'll probably be headed back next week again and I'm not giving up yet. I'm determined to get some more silver out of OH :icon_thumleft:

Maybe you should try either switching or expanding to dimes. You'll surely get more volume and probably more silver.
