Just thought I would share this tip I learned from Buckleboy. I used no water on these, only used toothpicks (although I need to try the bamboo skewers, I went through A LOT of toothpicks!). It does take a lot of time but the results were well worth it. I just start in one spot until i get down to that pretty green & work from there. I found these 3 this past weekend. The 1869 is still in kinda rough shape but legible(you can see in the photo where i had just started working on it) Found the 1891 a few weeks ago but no before pic (it looked like it was toast when i dug it) The 1866; I could barely tell it was an IH when I found it. Give it a try, I think you'll be pleased. Also- the wood is softer than the copper so its not abrasive. Hope this helps, my IHs are looking better since I've started doing this! HH!

You might want to try some boiling hydrogen peroxide first -- might save you a lot of time (and toothpicks) ;) LOL

I usually take a min or two and clean IH's as soon as they are dug. It seems they are harder to clean once they dry. I usually have a bottle of water and a soft toothbrush with me while hunting. Ive been tempted to carry a little film can with water in, and let them soak in there till I get home.
