It is a Meglodon tooth with crustations. Badly worn and chipped, not worth much. I have quite a few of them.

meglodon

Thanks. He is willing to sell it but I understand the condition factor lowering the price. I really like it though.
My girlfriend wants me to start taking her to hunt some creeks. Do you dive for them? We just want to hunt creeks...no desire to play in the
Cooper !! lol

When you say "...play in the Cooper" I assume you live in or around Charleston? I used to live in Summerville and Mt P. Yes, I dive mostly for mine now as it is easier on my back but I do occasionally dig and sift a creek.

Call the city hall in Summerville, they past an ordinance and the fine is like $500 if caught digging. As I hear, you can still walk the canals, you just cannot have any digging tools on you and I even heard they consider a cup a "digging tool". You need to build a sifter, basically a wood square out of like 2x4's, say 18"x24" with some soft of screen. I use the galvanized stuff from like Lowes or Home Depot and cut and attach it to the frame. Go to a creek/river and dig the gravel and sift it.

I caution you again to ask first about digging. Maybe go visit an area you want to sift, and see if there is anyone there looking for teeth. Locals can help you out better with this then I can as I now split my time between Savannah and St Augustine/

Oh! one more piece of advice, in South Carolina, you will need a Hobby Divers License, even if you will not dive. This is from the state and cost like $20 for 2 years if my memory serves me right. this license allows you to collect fossils and other stuff below any water line in the state. You will have to submit quarterly reports but don't worry, the state is not going to come and take anything you find.

When I do come back to the area I usually am diving the Edisto or Cooper rivers so I am not much help for you.

Here is one area for you and your GF
At Patriots Point there is the Charleston Harbor Resort. go at low tide and look for teeth by the water in between the two piers....Good Luck
