Tool or component?

Found at a homesite dating from 1840's to 1890's.
It's six inches long and iron.

Seems for the size and weight of it the "handle" opening might be small but ten I'm not a tool guy form days of old.

Also thought it might be a parking brake for and old buggy, but no knowledge in that area either.

Some sort of bolster for an iron spike maybe. Perhaps a reinforcement for a wagon part or building timber.

It's a clamp. I have these on alot of my old hand operated farm stuff. A bolt went through the slot and was tightened by a wing nut to hold a lid, corn sheller to a box, feed grinder to a box or coffee grinder to a kitchen shelf etc. Tony

Yeah that makes sense Tony, it's slightly rounded edges do not seem to have seen any impact or wear and it was in the middle of the nail bed where the house stood.

Gotta go with that answer.

Thanks Dan! It was far removed from any roadways and not in a junk pile. Possibly a tractor spring or buggy spring mount perhaps I also thought because the site was not active into the 20th century. But the thing did show up approximately where the house stood.
