This little item is 8" in length. Thanks for looking. (Also, I have a post over in the value forum for some Craftsman displays that I inherited - I haven't been able to find anything similar online. If anyone has the chance to take a look - much appreciated).

For what its worth...I've been cleaning pistols / firearms for 35 years....never seen a cleaning rod like that....if the eyelet was almost at the very end of the rod I'd agree....
I was gonna say the same thing minus the 35 year thing, but yeah never seen one like that.

Does the shaft spin independently from the knurled knob end? Or are they “locked” and spin together as one?

They are locked and spin together - but the knurled knob can be unscrewed from the shaft. Thanks for looking.

If if it held a spring it might have been part of the tube magazine assembly on an auto load .22 rifle.

Ok I believe that can rule out gun cleaning rod. As I have never seen one that didn’t spin freely from the handle.
