I wouldn't recommend carrying that knife on you if you are detecting in any city park or other such public property, you will likely get the local authorities called on you more times than it's worth. Sandman256's recommendation of using a screwdriver is a good one if you are detecting in town, that along with a plastic trowel for removing dirt from a hole if necessary (the narrow type typically used for bulb planting and available in any garden center) is what I carry.

In my state anyone carrying a knife over 3.5" could be considered in violation of carrying a deadly weapon, and although one could counter with a defense of needing to carry it for protection of life/limb etc, why hassle with being arrested when you can carry a screwdriver and trowel and skip all of the legal drama.
