as i said on the intro forum, i am heading up to my brothers farm here in oz, but i am too late to share in a hunt tomorrow for a cache of mint condition golden sovereigns (not on my brothers farm but on a friends farm)
one has been found in the past week with not a scatch or blemish and worth a cool 1200 au$
one of my nephews has been invited along for the search for the cache, believed buried 140 years ago, and he forgot to suggest his poor old unc coming along as well
rumour has it that there is a cache of golden sovereigns that were buried on this old sheep station 140 years ago but nobody knew exactly where until this week, and now they have an idea of where it may be
although one swallow doesnt make it spring at least they now have a starting point, if i can cajole a look at it i will get some pics and post here
i think we used to have gold sovereigns and half sovereigns minted here in australia until the 1930.s, but te one that was found i believe was a pommie (english) gold sovereign minted in 1860
will keep the outcome? posted

This is a fascinating post! Please keep us informed and updated, and we like pictures too.

well. it never went as we would have liked...
some history and mystery

where the sovereign was found was on an old sheep station (ranch) in the golden triangle of the state of victoria in oz, where rumour has it that a cache of sovereigns was buried somewhere on the property in the later stages of the gold rush

recently a new internal farm road has been graded and the owner of the property was walking back along the new road to the homestead, when he picked up the sovereign in very very good condition laying on the surface.

my nephew as i said, was invited to have a look around with his detector, but all he xould come up with was heaps of metal objects and wire from old fences. so whats needed is lots more history on the place and the patience to detect a pretty long roadside area

whp knows i may get a guernsey next time! (aussie saying meaning getting on the team)
