I agree with gypsy... or maybe it's just flat iron trash.

The ridge on the top with what looks like an even thickness indicates NOT a hatchet or ax right?

I dunno...

Looks like it could be one to me.

Tend to agree with Gypsyheart about this item. The line across the top would indicate it was folded over, meaning somewhat thin iron. Not heavy like an axe or hatchet head. Personally, I'd toss it.

Okay,I didn't see the line at the top of this thing.Anyway, the general shape is consistant with an old tomahawk/hachet and the line may not mean anything.Look at this one from the 1850's,notice the lines running vertically, who's to say? So does the metal taper out thicker to the small of this thing as it should nc-joe?

I agree, too thin. I only did that to show the prospective he may have been looking at.

Edit, After duggummup posted that impeccable tomahawk, I may have to rethink what I just wrote.

I think the line across the top is the sharpened edge........

I've dug more trash iron then I care to admit... I really think this was part of almost anything besides an edged weapon. This is a broken piecs of stove, oven, or what have you. It's like looking at an old iron wagon/buggy suspension spring and seeing a sword!

The north flat edge and the west curved edge are as-built, but the south and east edges are snapped or broken edges.

If it WAS from an edged weapon... it's still just crude iron trash now. :-\

My three cents... thanks for reading.

I'm leaning more to the trash side on this. The "line" on my piece would not be the "blade" side, as the line is a step up in thickness. Otherwise, it is uniform in thickness everywhere else. IF anything, the rounded side would have been the blade, but again, doesn't look like it was sharp. The narrowest side is the side that appears to be broken, all other sides appear to just be corroded.
