Cool find... Is the handle metal also?? Most trade axes had the hole for the wooden handle. Dont start chipping away though.Might be worth the effort of getting some help in cleaning it. I think there are forums on here on how to do it. Thanks for showing.Maybe enlarge your pic just a little might help in seeing it?

Might be some kind of trade ax, used for intricate carving seeing how it was so small. Just a guess. NICE FIND....................Hogge

I think it might be an axe on one end and a hammer on the other. Kinda of like a roofing hammer. Most Indian trade axes looked like the one I have below.Hope this helps you

yes it is very small its is 4 " from blade tip, to back pointed end.

Blade its self is 2" long.

Ive also noticed, that it has the CLASSIC triangular shaped blade! I cant find any pics anywhere of one that size or shape.

if you think it's all iron, i remember hearing that it may be useful to simply throw it in the fire. after that, some of the crust on it may just fall off. not enitrely sure if it'll work, but you might want to give it a try. if you think it's valuable, you might not want to.

cool find!

since it is so small, it may be a pipe, and not a axe...difficult to tell with all that gunk.

hey all! well i finally got it cleaned down, and the top layer off! its is not a pipe! that's for sure!

Its appears to be all Iron, I will have to post pics later , but i have to run! Its is very dark in color!
And perhaps the biggest clue of all is...The is a "HOLE" near the top corner of the blade, and it is a perfect circle, its made that way you can tell when looking at it, and it also look like there is the same Small "hole" near the bottom corner, but unsure because there is still build up on it but you can see the impression. Do these small "pin punched looking holes" give any clues to identifying it ?

Sorry you have to wait for the pics, i will get them up when i return home. really wish you could see it now

Ok I am going to stay with my original guess on some type of roofing hammer. They put the hole or notch to catch the head of a nail. You want a for sure answer move the post to the what is it section. Those guys will show you a picture of it brand new in the box if possible.
Good luck and will check in to see what you have.
Later
