I was bored and needed to get out so thought I'd mess around in the yard just up the road we'd hit before. I started off finding some wheats. Then found my third V-Nickel of the year a 1907.
My last worthy find for the evening I'm not sure exactly what it is. I thought some sort of tag but, there's no hole in it. Then I thought token but, seems too personal to be a token. It says:
JAS H COOK
No. 11
N.MECH ST
CUMBD, MD
I believe the CUMBD is the abbreviation for Cumberland which is a town not to far away. Any thoughts what this might be?

Congrats on digging a couple of keepers, the V-N is still on my bucket list.

James H. Cook is listed in the 1895 Cumberland, MD City Directory as Saloon & Pool Rooms at 11 N. Mechanic, so I would suspect he went the "cheap route" and made his own trade tokens with a set of letter punches and blank planchets. Another example of this piece is pictured in Schenkman's Maryland Merchant Tokens book.

Thanks for the info. That's Sweet!!
I tried checking tokencatalog.com and couldn't find anything. It does look homemade, or cheaply made. It's not very thick and the K in COOK is messed up.
It's nice to know exactly what it is and not another one of those pieces in the "I don't know pile".
Thanks again!!

From an elevated view on the interstate, Cumberland appears to be a nice looking old city that I always think I'd like to detect when I go through. Lots of old brick buildings. How is it on the ground? Nice finds DS!

very interesting token!, I like the V nick too!!
