I recently found this in the yard of an old farmhouse. Like all my finds I like to know as much as I can about them. I tried doing a search for info on this one and found several very similar ones. However, one thing I noticed was that the ones I saw had something on one side identifying either the manufacturer or where you could redeem the token. This one says "Good for 5¢ Package Fruit Gum" on one side, but is blank on the other. Was this common? How would you know where you could trade it in? Thanks.

Until someone pipes in - I searched Google and found EBAY: GOOD FOR 5 CENTS PACKAGE OF FRUIT GUM 8846C just like yours (nothing on the back side)...

Yeah, that's the same as mine, so I guess some were just blank on one side. Maybe it was up to each store whether or not they wanted to put anything on one side. Would've been cool if I could connect it to a local establishment, but it seems to be a common generic token. Thanks for the reply.

As far as Tokens go... That is the kind you want to dig !! :notworthy:

Keep @ it and HH !! :laughing7:

Can't really help... But that is a very cool find! Congrats

AFAIK all of these fruit gum tokens were made by or for the Watling Fruit Gum Co. of Chicago. Go to TokenCatalog.com and put fruit gum in the search box to see several varieties of tokens. I think you are correct that these tokens could be ordered with or without info like the name of the business. There were several other brands of slot machines that used similar tokens - Google has a number of pics and history. These slot machines were often counter-mounted models that were positioned next to the cash register of a business in hopes that any change given for purchases would be put in the slot rather than the pocket.

any merchant selling packaged fruit gum at that time would most likely accept it, other then that? i dont know squat about merchant tokens.

JD, l don't really know much about tokens but have found a few. In my research I found that a business could order them with their name on them at an extra cost. So maybe the personalized advertising wasn't a justifiable expense for the business that placed the order for the one that you found. Anyway, that's a fine looking token! I love to find them.
