Looks like a confederate one cent. Nice

wow! what were they used for?

Well, well. Less than 20 genuine Confederate 1 cent coins are known to exist. If it were genuine it would be a 120,000 dollar coin. So....I'm thinking it is a reproduction copy.. Interesting find indeed!

I hope it is real.......Since less than 20 genuine Confederate States of American (CSA) cents were ever struck, BHG86, you probably have a replica of this famous coin. If it were genuine, the catalogs say its value would be $120,000! .......Click link below for more information.

Coin Value | US Confederate States 1 Cent (fake) 1861

GOOD LUCK

Bill

I think it's one cent in southern currency at that time. I'm sure someone else has more info. You can try a google search for confederate one cent and there will be some info.

1 thing is for sure ...its been in the ground awhile to turn that color

i thank you gave her a heart attack lol

BHG86........I did own one of the Bashlow "RESTRIKES"......but they were struck well after the actual original date. It turns out that a man named Bashlow uncovered the old (genuine) Conferederate dies in 1961. By that time the dies had been pretty well beat up. There are hammer blows on the obverse (heads side) and chisel marks on the reverse (tails side). Mr. Bashlow hired a private mint to produce a short series of restruck CSA cents, and these carry strong collector premiums today. If you have one in basically uncirculated condition, you might sell it for well over $100.......I acquired mine with a bunch of tokens I purchased from a Florida Coin Dealer, FREE.....and sold it on Ebay for over $50.00.......so the restrikes do have value, but FAKES have very little value......BUT yours looks very interesting......Again, I hope it IS REAL!!

My restrike looked like this:
1861 Cent.JPG1861 cent obv.JPG
the pictures above are from ebay......mine looked like this, and was not unciruclated.....the reverse with the chisel marks are obvious.

Good Luck........Bill

WoW!!! I may have just had a heart attack!!! how do you tell if its a copy?!

Cool find BHG.

Cropping a pic right down to the coin itself will help a lot, as it will be much bigger on here. "Should" help to ID.

I think the best way to tell a fake or a replica, is the dot/period after AMERICA on the obverse......only the original and restrike had a small dot farther from the A.....most fakes/replica had a large dot close to the A or none at all.......Hope this helps.
I was a Coin Dealer for over 10 years back in the 1970-1980's.....and had 3 stores.....I retired in 1988 and moved to Florida.......Good Luck

This is a list of numismatists:
http://conecaonline.org/content/coneca_attributers.html

They deal with mint errors, but some of these guys specialize in older currency... if they can't help, they might be able to point you in a good direction. James Wiles is my go-to guy, he's been dealing with coins for many of a decade, he'd probably know something.

Tried to find what I think is the same thing I found about 20 years ago. The only differance is I remember mine being out of a white metal? Did they also make reproductions. And I think it said 1/1000 .. wish I could find it.

So i guess that means its a fake... Exciting find regardless... :-)

GHG86,
A few questions;1) what part of the country did you find it,2) How deep was it?
3) what type of site did you find it on An old home place, near a battle site, Or any other facts you can share with us about the hunt, Like what else did you find with or near it?
It could be the real deal. Good luck and ...........................................HH

Ive seen coin dealers that have a hard time telling some coins from fakes so with that being said i dont think id take someones word for it on something that could be so rare...id send it in and have it slabbed by someone that really knew what they were talking about...it would need to be graded before you would want to sell it regardless im not sure what it costs maybe someone else can tell you that but i dont think its that much

That would be nice if it was the real deal get it checked !! i enlarged the photo,s a little hope this helps people see it better . Good luck on this one :icon_thumright: Jim View attachment 798685IMG_20130519_212008-1.jpg
