Found this token in a older part of time. It was stuck in a clump of black hard stuff. I thought was a heat rock but the front was flat, so I rub on the ol’ knee and saw so lettering. I start breaking away the bake gently and saw the “5” on the back. Should I give it a peroxide bath? IMG_3044.JPGIMG_3045.JPG

Also found these. I thought the wire thing was just that until I saw the hands.

UPDATE:::: IT’’S SILVER!!!!!

UPDATE::: One side reads: E.C. Joullian Packing Co.- Violet LA - Labor Check-The opposite side reads: Half Hours- 5.

Electrolysis is fairly inexpensive and, if done correctly, can do a really nice job. Look on YouTube or Google for info and see if it meets your needs.

Peroxide wont hurt it, but I doubt it will get it where u want it.
If that is heavy corrosion, it may be pitted real bad beneath the crust.
I use a salt vinegar tinfoil method a lot, sometimes it works great, but if there is pitting beneath the crust, then it will definitely show after cleaning.
It removes the crust, but u may be left with such bad pitting that you still cant make out details.
Its an if all else fails technique, but it has sometimes left me with excellent results.

You see I’ve never had luck with that method and I don’t know why.

I have never had much luck with the baking soda/tinfoil method on silvers, but the (Salt, vinegar, tinfoil) on brass and copper will eat any amount of corrosion, including the green verdigris.
I used this method on these tokens I dug Saturday. Fortunately the soil is kind at this site, and there was minimal pitting.

That’s a nice one! Soak it in peroxide overnight then use a toothbrush to brush off what you can. Then repeat soaking for 6 to 8 hours at time. Replace the peroxide each time as well. You can get great detail out of it. When your happy with the result wash it off well with water then let it completely dry. Then apply a good layer of petroleum jelly and let sit for at least 8 hours. Lastly wipe the token clean with terry cloth or cotton cloth. Most of the time any excess corrosion will be removed with this last step.

I’ll try that first if that doesn’t work then I’ll try bonepickers method. Thanks guys!!

It looks pretty far gone, but you never know.
Always nice to dig a four scallop token, one of the more unusual shapes.
Peroxide would be a good start, may not do a great job, but it won't hurt it.
please keep us posted, it's been so long since I've dug one, I need to live vicariously through other people's finds.
Kudos!

UPDATE :: LOUISIANA TOKEN- JOULLIAN PACKING CO., VIOLET, LA

One side reads: E.C. Joullian Packing Co.- Violet LA - Labor Check-The opposite side reads: Half Hours- 5.

E.C. Joullian Packing Company had a rich history spanning for over a century from 1881 to 1997. Started in Biloxi Ms. and branched out in Violet La that canned seafood mainly dealing with oysters and shrimp. I found mine in Bay St. Louis Ms. Mystery solved:) IMG_3089.JPGIMG_3088.JPG ExampleIMG_3084.JPG

Nice. A Joullian token is up there on my dig list.
I have a few hot spots near where some of the factories used to be located. I have been working on a collection of local MS tokens, mostly just ones I dig.
Unfortunately most of the factories and labor camps have casinos and casino parking lots on top of the old sites.
Saw a few nice examples sell on ebay recently, but I didn't want to pay for em.
Here is the info from my MS book. Wanting to buy the LA Crawford and Farber book, as Chathams book only shows the MS varieties.
BTW, which cleaning method did you use. Looks like some details are beginning to appear.

I used peroxide and salt for 8 hours and then electrolysis. I want to find out where the factory was in Biloxi and Violet. Yeah those casino parking lots really took up some prime real estate.

I have all the biloxi sanborn maps, they show most of the factories on them. I will look in a few.

I found it on my 1909 set, but not on the 1914's. Send me your email.
Its in the same area I have been digging the DLD's.
