Happy New Year to you all!
Not been out much yet and running out of new fields to dig.
I did spend a few hours on a ridge and furrow field this afternoon that already has been done to death by other detectorists over the years - "You won't find much in there" the Farmer warned me - He was right - but - I did find this -
I'm almost sure that its a token - still quite a bit of detail left - Copper or bronze - Just over 2.5cm wide.
I've taken pics from different angles - Plumes, Crowns and the letter 'L' back to back forming a triangle with what looks like the '&' sign in the middle:
Face-B-1.webp

Face-B-2.webp

Face-B-3.webp

Face-B-4.webp

and the other face symmetrical - again with plumes 'or crown':
Face-A-1.webp

Face-A-2.webp

Face-A-3.webp

Face-A-4.webp

Some of the letters still showing 'AN'
Anyone had one like this before?
Any help truly appreciated.
David.

Re: Token?

Just been looking at some of the French 14th-15th century Jettons on the Colchester Site - there are quite a few similarities with this one I've just found - but not identical.

Never seen one before, but I think we can discount Jetton/Jeton. But it maybe a French Coin, definately a foriegn coin (I think), probably late 1600s/early 1700s.

I'm no good at foriegn & have no books on these, but I hope it will point people in the right direction :dontknow:

I would like to know myself. :icon_thumright:

fits in with my lucky guess work & SS's French connection :D

Nice ID, you clearly get more of this type of coin in Canada, I find virtually no French coins, only the Jetons.

They only turn up at the oldest sites so they're around but certainly not a common find. I think I've found maybe 6, but for quite a while I was the guy watching them being dug. That said, I don't know anyone with more than 5 or 6 so I did some good catching up.

Yes, this was an old site - trouble is, every detectorist in Derbyshire must have been on this field before me - I'm glad they missed this one.

Those have extra special meaning here because they were carried by the first settlers to the area. When we find one, it's basically hitting the oldest stuff we can dig.

Very nice French coin and ID of same :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Always something left behind even in heavy hunted areas. Targets may be slim but more often any targets found at such good old locations are keepers :icon_sunny:

In places like the UK I'm guessing most detector guys move on to greener pastures rather than to tap a place until it's completely quiet. Heck we do that here... it's just more productive to spend the time looking for a new site than it is digging the last remaining targets. (it is pretty quiet when we leave though) Any decent site we always return to after the pough so that's when we try to get the little we miss.

Good point! Now if I had an early 1700's site I would be hitting it over and over again :D

Yeah any we hit that date to the 1700s get smoked pretty good. They are usually small so get quiet very fast. I can't remember the last site we hit that had a good 3rd day, usually fairly tapped after 2.
