Hi. Found this token from an urban field where Civil War camps were known to exist; however, I think this token is probably late 19th/early 20th century. This is based on silly instinct; I don't know. I researched the net but came up with nothing; I mean nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree,, if I had to guess I would say early 1900's.

Nice find! :icon_thumright:

There is a Frank G. Van Tuyl in the 1900 Albany census age 25 occupation is bartender.

Also the 1909 Albany Business Directory lists Frank G. Van Tuyl under the Saloon category with a business at 30 State Street.

----- I also found a reference that I think it is the same man listed as a Corporal in the 1st NY Infantry in the Spanish American War. In the 1900 Albany City Directory he is listed as having a saloon at 196 Delaware Av.

1st New York Roster

Just mentioning this on the off chance the site you found it may have been used for Spanish American War training or something of the like which might explain how the token got there. I don't know where you are located.

Thank you, Bramblefind, for the information. The "park"/ballfield is located several blocks from the locations you listed. Finding older tokens can be more pleasurable than finding coins of the same era.

So true! I'm not far from Albany too and I had fun researching this piece and trying to match up those addresses. The 30 State St. location is very near Jack's Oyster House and might even be part of that establishment now. I would have to research it more to pinpoint it.
