TOJO'S BALD HEAD SLAPPED IN COURT

The guy who slapped Tojo’s head was the Japanese nationalist writer Shūmei Ōkawa, described by the Allies as the "Japanese Goebbels". He was prosecuted as a Class-A war criminal at the Tokyo tribunal after the end of the war, but the charges were dropped soon after the proceedings began when he was judged mentally unfit to stand trial.

In court his behaviour was erratic, including sometimes presenting himself barefoot in his pyjamas, shouting "Inder! Kommen Sie!" (Come, Indian!) in German and "This is act one of the comedy!" A U.S. Army psychiatrist examined him, reported that he was unfit to stand trial, and the presiding judge agreed.

Although many thought (and still suspect) he was feigning mental illness to escape justice, after transfer to a U.S. Army hospital it was confirmed that he was suffering mental illness caused by syphilis. He was then transferred to a mental hospital in Tokyo, but released in 1948, and died in 1957.
