Great job Kuger. I was going to say metal thermometer.

It's either a slack adjuster as Kuger said, or either it's a suspender part. I really can't tell from the one pic.

Don't see any way for a belt to pass through the item.

It looks the same from front or backside. There are no places where it appears to be broken. Smooth to the touch all the way around the outside also.

Oh, I couldn't tell that from the photo. So you're saying it's a totally solid piece? Can you post some more photos, and give us an exact measurement. :) Breezie

It is one point two by point three two inches. The outside is solid the inside part moves a bit to the left and right. Will try to post picture later have to get off line.

The outside ring is solid on the outside U shaped on the inside. Am wondering if maybe a spring type clip could have in past clipped into the U groove.

Failed attempt at one of the first known paper clips?

Reminds me of one of the ribbons that go on a uniform.

Thanks for all the attempts at the I.D.s! The ribbon part appeals to me and I have found some military related stuff at this site. Still it is probably more likely a part of some kind of suspender or hair ribbon clip.Still the variety of the finds at this site continue to amaze me, the coin count is low but theres is always some kind of relic turning up and they are often things I have never found before. Still on the other hand it doesn't seem as fancy as the ribbon clips in the above pictures, so I feel that is ruled out. What do you guys think? Guess it could be used to strike matches against but are there any known pictures of examples like this?

I was gonna say ribbon clip too but I held back until bigfoot posted. That was my first thought also.
