Detector(s) used
TIME RANGER CZ3D ACE 250
I use the time ranger & the wife uses the ace 250 . We bought both new about 1 year ago . These are the first & only detectors we've ever used . I planted a few coins at 6 " & tried both detectors . Both had new batteries , were set at max sens . & no disc . The time ranger has 3 audio tones , high , med , & low . Coins except nickels should have a high tone . Nickels have the low tone like iron / foil . Pulltabs & screw caps can either be low or med tone . I have never used the 250 so I'm not sure about different tones on it but my wife says she thinks it has about 3 tones . For instance she says it sounds a little different on a quarter than it does on a dime or penney & different also on a nickel .

Also the time ranger has all metal smart trac & an all metal mode that can be ground balanced . The ace 250 doesn't have these modes . Here is what I found out on coins buried at 6 " in wet soil .

Time Ranger

Clad silver dollar - Depth meter right on at 6 "
Icon bounced around
Signal steady but about 50 / 50 between high & low tone
All metal smart trac -good steady signal

ACE 250

Clad silver dollar - Depth meter read 8+
Icon bounced around
Signal steady with mostly good tone

Time Ranger

Clad 50 cent piece - Depth meter right on at 6 "
Steady signal but with mostly low tone
Icon bounced around
All metal smart trac - steady signal

ACE 250

Clad 50 cent piece - Depth meter read 8+"
Icon bounced around
Steady signal but about 50/50 between high & low or good & bad

Time Ranger

SL Quarter - Depth meter on at 6 "
Icon in iron/foil
Steady signal but low tone with occasional high beep
All metal smart trac - steady signal

ACE 250

SL Quarter - Depth meter read 8+"
Icon in iron/foil
Occasional high or good tone
Steady signal

Time Ranger

Mercury Dime - Depth meter at 6 to 8 "
Erratic low tone
Steady signal in all metal smart trac

ACE 250

Mercury Dime
Occasional 1 way blip

Time Ranger

V Nickel - Depth meter on at 6 "
Occasional blip in no disc
Steady signal in all metal smart trac

ACE 250

V Nickel - Depth meter on at 6 "
Occasional blip

Time Ranger

Wheat Penney - Depth meter on at 6 "
Occasional blip in no disc
Steady signal in all metal smart trac

ACE 250

Wheat Penney
Just a couple blips

Well , I think I learned a lot about these detectors today . How well do you really know your detector ? If I find anything over 3 or 4 " I think I'm going to have to dig an awful lot of iffy signals .
The time ranger seems to do fair in all metal but there's no telling what you're digging . The depth meter seemed pretty much right on at 6 " .

Is there a detector that will tone ID accurately pretty much to its depth ? This is an honest & unbiased & totally unprofessional test . I really wish a whole bunch of you with different machines would do the same & report your results . I realize there are many different soil conditions in many different areas but I really believe tests like this would give a lot of insight to a lot of people . Now where's that guy that can nail a dime at 10 " with his time ranger ?? I could use a few pointers . Just kidding lol . Everyone have a good day & HH .

Interesting test. And to think I always just drop my ring or coin on top of the ground.

I'm really still a novice, using a $30 yard sale BH, but I've never had a day that I didn't find something interesting. Always wonder what I may be missing with my low-end detector.

Still have many sites lined up that I haven't touched yet (WV), getting time and energy together on the same day is a real trick.

Now you know why there are $200.00 machines and $1300.00 machines ;D

I expected this type of results out of the Ace250. I have one. It's an average machine at a good price. That's why it is popular. I thik my daughter's Discovery 2200, a Bounty Hunter from Radio Shack, goes deeper than my Ace.
