Today's Nickle Finds

I got bored today because it is too freaking cold to go detecting so I went to the bank and got $100 in nickles to search through. Any nickle older than 1970 is put into a plastic coin tube for that year. I have many tubes of 1964 and 1964D so I don't even bother with that year anymore. Well, here are my older finds:

1939
1940 - 2
1941 - 2
1942
1943P (Silver War Nickle)
1943S (Silver War Nickle)
1946 - 2
1948
1949D
1951D - 2
1952
1953D
1954 - 3
1954D
1955D - 2
1957D - 5
1958D - 4
1959
1959D

I also got 4 canadian nickels; 85, 88, 98, 99. I also got a 2003D with a beautiful rainbow on each side!

Very nice! I had a neighbor who would get pennies by the bucket-full and search them. I really should do that sometime... :)

It can get addicting! Haha, so stay away! I just enjoy filling up my coin albums. I only fill them out with coinds found in change. Here are the dates that I have NOT found as far as Jefferson Nickels go:

1938D
1938S
1939D
1939S
1940S
1942P
1942S
1943D
1944D
1944S
1945D
1946S
1947D
1949S
1950D
1951S
1958

I am getting closer each and every day :)

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

Great finds!! I would get more change if i had more money :P I was going to get 50 dollars worth of pennies but the bank was closed, stupid bankers hours >:( o well i will tomarow :) You should be able to put together a complete jefferson set with change finds, there are a few such as 1950-d and 1938 s i think that are rarer though. that rainbow coin you found is probably "uncirculated rainbow toned" But if its a purple color with circular scratches then it got caught under the fence of a coin counter, i have a few of those.

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

Yeah, I'm still awaiting the 50-D and 38-S. The rest I feel pretty confident about finding. It's just a matter of time for those.

Before I deposit any money into my account I just cash it in for change. Then I take the change to another bank branch and repeat, haha. I get wierd looks when I bring in about $500 in change at a time. Especially when it's all in half dollars. Most banks only have a few half dollars and then I bring in 1,000 of them and they look at me wierd, haha. I love it though.

I have a piggybank with 40 lbs. of dimes, quarters, and nickles. I compute about $440 face value. Is it really worth my while to search thru these? What should I look for? I was just going to take them to a bank with a counter but they don't have one for public use!

Is it worth te trouble? Thanks in advance for the advice.

How long have you been collecting these coins?

If you have free time it can be fun and exciting to see what's in your change. Here are some things to look for:

Nickels: anything pre 1960
Dimes: 1964 and older is silver; 1968 to current with S mint marks.
Quarters: 1964 and older is silver; 1968 to current with S mint marks; and then do some research on any errors in the new quarters, like the wisconsin errors.

As far as pennies go, I have no clue really except for the 1960D small and large date varities.

You could also find a little kid that would probably enjoy doing it if you offered them some kind of reward.

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

Oh yes, for the past 15 years, finally filled the pig.

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out for the nickles you need.

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

OK, here's what I found. 1940,1948,1946,1954,1957,1958, ...are the pre-1960s made differently.

I noticed that I could pick out the 1964s easily because of the pronounced rim on most every one. I also found a 1987 that was unusually "deep" on both sides with a high rim, and a 1995 that was very flat except for TJ's hair...very detailed.

If you want any send me your address privately.

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

I just try to pick out the pre-1960s because I see them as eventually having some value. I just keep them hoarded in coin tubes and maybe some day my grandchildren can make a few dollars off of them, haha.

Did you find any silver in your search?

Re: Today's Nickle Finds

careful...it can get addicting! Dimes are good...people miss the silver ones because they are small...Just found another in the coin rolls from the bank today! HH

I do dimes a lot as well. I've already got an album full of dimes, so now I'm trying to fill them up with nickels :)
