Hit the river first thing this morning. Fished for about a hour managed to catch 3 smallmouth and 4 largemouth. Then hit the woods and spider webs most complete with spider. Found a couple broken ones. The last picture is maybe some type of mine? There is twelve holes like that on a bluff that looks over the river. Some smaller but definitely been dug. Any ideas?

Man you've got the best of both worlds with Smallmouth and Largemouth. Too hot for the "smallies" where I live. I hope to seriously get after the Spotted Bass here when it cools off a bit. September 15 is the target date! As far as the mine... I know little about that but there are a few mines in my area that look nothing like that. Is it possible that a giant old tree died (such as a Cypress) and left that depression? A shot in the dark!!

I don’t think it was uprooted trees. Around here the tend to drop a good portion of the dirt back into hole. Hard for me to get in picture there is foot and a half tall ring around hole. I am sure it was done by humans not machine. Location alone excludes any type of machine.

I have sort of similar pits in an old sandstone quarry the main part of it is on the edge of a bluff and they carved back from there but there are also depressions here and there where they went after rock a bit back from the edge. The biggest difference I see is the ones I encounter have rock debris piled around the edge making a berm, yours looks like all pit

Nice couple of points! Those holes...could they be Civil War troop positions, overlooking the river? Might want to hit them with your detector.

What’s type of bedrock is common in the area? If limestone, I’d think that they could be sinkholes. It doesn’t look like they hold water, so possibly some sort of subsidence. Nice finds. That little white one sure stuck out.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

They could have been quarrying flint. Dig around in the bottom of the hole. A flint pit will have obvious debitage. I've dug Reed's Spring flint in a woods near Branson. Anywhere you dug below the bluff there was flint. Gary

All the rocks are piled around them the one in picture rises a foot at least and is close to three feet across before dropping into hole. The hole it’s self is 5 foot deep the bottom of it is five feet across and at top fourteen across roughly. It is tough to get debris in picture because it’s so smooth almost like placed

Tony you can not take a step in that area without stepping on something. It’s in the woods as you see if you swipe your foot in front of you to move leaves you will see 20 flakes/ broken ones.

I agree with you, Papa. Depressions like those in Virginia, especially overlooking a river, would be troop positions or even hut sites. Good suggestion to go back with a detector.

Thanks for in put all I will pack the AT-Pro next time I am in that area. I will also try to get better pictures.
