Today's hunt nets a colonial copper
My old detecting partner Chuck and I haven't hunted together in quite a while so we decided to get out and take advantage of the first decent day in quite a while. We wanted to get into a new site somewhere, but as we well know, it's difficult to catch folks at home during the week. So after 4 unsuccessful attempts with that we ended up going back to an old site. This place was probably one of my better research finds as I was able to discover a little tidbit from the 1930s that mentioned the old home there was built in 1914, but it was put back on the original foundation which dated to 1635. We found a lot of colonial stuff there over the last few years, but it had been hit hard and we weren't expecting much. I decided to spend most of my time there in the area behind the house that I remember being quite trashy with loads of iron and other modern junk. I used to avoid areas like that, but now the heavy iron is my favorite (and most productive) area to hunt. After only about 10 minutes I was able to carefully separate a deep, high tone from the rest of the junk with my F75 and out popped what appeared to be a 1773 Va halfpenny. That was a great start to the hunt, but it ended up being the only decent find I made. Chuck wasn't having much luck either, but later wandered off into the woods and found a well worn LC that someone had tried to reshape. Very strange looking for sure. We had wanted to get into the adjacent field which had been quite productive in the past, but instead of the cut peanuts we were hoping for it was full of uncut soybeans. Maybe next time ......

I made my rounds today and everything is still in soybean!! It won't be too much longer though.
