Good digs guys, the grounds frozen a couple inchs down in the north east so digging for now is out, keep it up your keeping us from withdrawls

A couple of those pennies are really eaten away. I've never pulled any of the ground here that look anything like that in this dessert where I live. What causes that?

Those pennies are victims of chemical fertilizer used on the playing field. My football field pennies are exactly like that. Giterdone
 

After a closer look I think gitterdone hit the nail on the head. The edges are crumbling, no real slice marks and the field is constantly being fertilized and watered. also just the pennies seem to be affected. Thanks.HH
 

new pennies just fall apart once they are in the ground. I have found quite a few like that in several different places. Something about their composiiton....
