Ahh the trials of this sport! Himself‘s truck is stuck in the garage being repaired, so the back up vehicle (my car) was called into service, ut this means no exciting trips off road to hidden fields, so we went back to the fields the crop failed in. We have spent many days in these fields, so we’re excited we found anything! xx

Interesting little badge, not id it yet… not sure what this next piece is.. is big and heavy, I do not think it’s a handle 🤔 xx neat little thimble, spindle whorl and lead weight, little lead button, little silver bit, patterned lead piece and a tiny tack stud, buttons, 2 pre dec (1890) and my find of the day a broken hammered! 😎 xx

tomorrow will be more of the same - hopefully the truck will be back with us for next week! 😬 xx

Congrats!
Great recoveries.
And as a bonus you pressed your car into off roading! A good thing. Though as himself well knows, it's always better to press someone else's vehicle into off roading! L.o.l..

Kind of a tad broken kind of day it was.
Sorry to hear about himself's truck needing repair-it seems that they breakdown on the important days never on the unimportant ones.
Good to hear that you took the Bentley out to get digging. :laughing7:
On the subject of bentleys-that's one bent up hammered short cross you found yourself :hello2:

The round patterned lead piece is an interesting piece-Is it plain on the backside?
The handle looking handle I just can't get a handle on if it's an actual handle.:icon_scratch:

Still with the bents/brokens, the bit's and bobs, it all adds up to another wonderful adventure in the muds.

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

The Leicester Evening Mail was published in Leicester, Leicestershire, England from 1910–1963.
Don in SoCal.

Agree on the ID, but the “Leicester Evening Mail” was originally the “Leicester Mail” and changed its name in 1931, so that’s the earliest possible date for the badge. These clubs continued throughout the 1930s but gradually fizzled out after war was declared in 1939.

The Tom Thumb Club was founded in 1929 and sponsored by the Yorkshire Evening News. Other newspapers then followed suit with similar schemes, including the Leicester Evening Mail, although the clubs were largely confined to the northern parts of England.

Unlike most other children’s clubs, membership was free. It was open to boys and girls under the age of 16 by completion of a coupon from the newspaper. They then received a members’ rule book, a personalised membership certificate and a membership badge, plus a card from Tom Thumb on their birthdays. One of the rules was that every member had to make a promise to a parent, guardian or teacher that they would “Try to be always truthful. Try to be always happy. Do at least one good deed every day”.

The participating newspapers ran a club section (some also had a special supplement) including offers for special holidays, day excursions, local activities and other privileges for members. The clubs also actively encouraged support for local charities, especially local children’s hospital wards such as the ‘Tom Thumb Club Hospital Cot Fund’ and donors would get a special mention in the newspaper’s club section.
