As always as soon as we enter the store I stroll casually by the coin machine and give a subtle glance at the reject tray. Spotted a few coins, made a quick sweep and kept on walking. I don't even look in my hand until I'm a good ways off. Eventually I took a quick look and stuck the coins in my pocket. Spotted at least one dime, maybe two, some pennies, a Canadian, and another smaller foreign coin that I had never seen before. Later I took them out for a better look. The second dime turned out to be a dark plastic disc. I could not make out the other small coin so I used the magnifier on my phone and discovered it to be a US coin of some kind. The writing on this coin is really small and my first clue was the dates. Two of them! The 1776 was a good clue for a US coin or token. Then I found a denomination. I still had no idea what it was. So, I went to the encyclopedia of Google. Well, that was a shocker!
Let's see who identifies it first and then I'll post more pics.

Wow…. I rarely find anything…..much less something like that.

I was absolutely shocked, first of all that this ended up in a coin machine, and then that I just happened to be there, right day, right time.
Obviously I know nothing about coins. The first picture i found on the net was selling for $4,700!! Of course I do know that condition is everything, and it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. It's in pretty good shape. I see a couple of pockmarks. But overall it looks nice. Guess it would be worth having it graded. Something I know nothing about. All comments and evaluations are welcome.

Converted one to b&w for contrast. Weight was bouncing between 4.1 and 4.2.

Quick little story....as soon as you said dime size I knew it!
So back in the fifties my great uncle was a paperboy and for each week he would collect 10 cents for the papers he delivered...he told me this one particular old lady never gave him a tip ever for his service...but one day she paid him for the week with what she thought was a dime.
It was the same $2 1/2 gold coin you found..
.my g'uncle still has that coin and he is now in his late 80s...a great family story we like to tell once and a while

Send it to CAC, PCGS or NCG. These are the 3 top grading services. You have to be a “member” to send coins. You need to find a coin shop that is a member and have them send it in. Or you can pay to join and send it yourself. Having your coin in a slab from a top grading service will insure you will get top dollar for your coin. It also insures that the coin is not a Chinese fake!

Thank you. That's pretty much my plan. I read that doing that all yourself can run from <$100 up to as much as $400 depending on the estimated value and how much you insure it for.

CHINESE FAKE!!?????

Always said coin star can pay for groceries! You will get many many groceries from the value of that coin!

CHINESE FAKE!!?????
It's not a fake, relax, it's very clearly genuine given its size and weight, not to mention the spectacular detail and that edge is stellar looking. Make sure you don't damage it, it's a great piece of American history.

All that in one swipe of the reject tray? Hmmm. I wanna know where you shop? Somebody made an oops

So there is gold in them thar machines after all. Amazing score! I've had almost no luck at Publix. And this is the first Sesquicentennial commemorative I've seen on any thread.

CHINESE FAKE!!?????
Don’t underestimate the Chinese when it comes to faking anything. I don’t know for sure if that particular coin is faked, but absolutely nothing would surprise me. Your coin is likely good as the weight is correct. 4.18 g

Fantastic recovery! Congratulations!

This is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime find that coin collectors dream about. Nicely done spotting that in the reject tray! I'm sure it will net you a nice little windfall when you do sell it.

Anyone else find a gold coin in the coin machines?
