Today's finds 5-2-08

Bought 100 worth of loose from a bank today. When I got there they said they had to roll them for me, even though I said I would take them loose ( I had my trusty canvas bag with me). Anyway, I could hear them in the back counting them, and I could hear them hitting the table as they rolled them. Every now an then I heard the distinctive sound of a silver coin "Ping". Wound up with 12-40%
and 1-64. They said it took one year to build up the 100 in loose coins. Obviously no CRHers dumping there. Also found a 1999 S proof that appears to be 100% silver (the rim is shiny as a BU 64). I need to check online to see if they made any of these in silver. It is in good shape.

A few of the tellers said they had never even seen a half dollar before.

PS. Bought a bunch of 1 Oz. Silver Maples today at .80 over spot. Years range from 1988 to 2008. Most in original plastic and without toning. This to me is like hitting a "dream" box, even though the silver was not free.

They did make a silver 1999s. It sounds like you found one. If you have a jewelers scale that will tell you for sure.

DUDE...you had a better go at it than me today! lol, I went thru $1200 loose, rolled and bagged and only plucked 7-40%...and that was a 60 mile road trip...I should have just went to the dealer, but it was a nice day for a ride with the wife.

Silver Fox,

I don't have such a scale, but all my prior proofs had copper rims. This rim is silver-looking and the coin is in good shape, so I don't think the copper is faded, like you see on some old coins (40%s, etc.). So I guess it is silver. Any idea on what it is worth, other than silver value?

Jersey Devl,

I have been getting hand rolls and loose coins all week on and off and this is the first score I had. It happened to be near where I was working today, so I called just for grins (good to keep a yellow pages in the car for this purpose).

I think it was so good because when you get coins from average folks getting rid of change, you get great results (at least I always have).

Yesterday I almost got to buy a 1000 bag from a bank's coin counter. When I called the clerk mentioned it and I said I would pay cash and be right over. Anyway, the teller said the manager would not allow it because it had already been packed up for the carrier to come get it. From my conversation with the teller, I believe the bag took a long time to fill up. I tried every plea to get them to sell me the bag; "you will save yourselves from having to send it off" , "I will give you the money now", "I can be there in 5 minutes", "WWJD" (just kidding on that one).

Anyway, my pleas did no good. My very best scores have come from coin machine bags that have taken a while to fill up. One time I bought 1000 from a bank who had not changed the bag in 1.5 years. Lots of 90% and 40%s there. Plus a few weird items like foreign coins and such. If I could get a few banks selling me their coin machine bags I would probably never buy a box again, well maybe not as many as I buy now.

That proof you found Jim if it is silver goes for approx. 20.00-25.00 in unc condition and a clad on goes for about 10.00 unc. on ebay ....

Re: Today's finds 5-2-08

This was the first bag I ever got...it wasnt even full...only $508 ,the lady said there is a guy they call when it gets full and he picks it up but it's been awhile, but alas only 3 from that bag it was proly that guys dump and a few stragglers!
Ive been afraid really to ask about bags as I know dumps are part of the game and I hate to take a grand and spend it all in 1 place when there are 10 banks down the road, but what the heck I might as well mix up the routine a bit!

I would scalp those bags in a NY minute ...I think so of the better finds in this game are from those types of bags that and handrolls ....is just my opinion Devl but if I had the opportunity ( which I don't here ) I would snag them ....

This is where the whole question the teller bit comes in. I have found that in all of the instances I have asked the tellers about how long it took for the bag to fill to its current amount, I have received an honest answer. I have actually said no to buying bags from machines where the tellers told me that a person or two brought in large amounts at one time, etc., and that the bag filled up in a week or two or three. In the few instances where I have bought the bags from the machines it is where the said it took a long time to fill.

I look at it this way. The banks that have machines where I dump fill quickly. It only takes me an average of 1.7 coin dumps to fill a 1000 bag. If I go to a bank and they say the bag has not been changed in months, then I feel pretty good that there is not a CRHer dumping there. That is no guarantee of good coins, but so far for me this sort of reasoning has paid off 100% of the time when I have been able to buy from coin machine bags.

The main problem is that 99% of the banks don't seem to want to allow you to buy their coins in the machine. I keep hearing how they have to send if off to be rolled by the fed, or something like that. I currently have a couple of banks that let me buy from their machine, but it takes a long time for enough to collect for me to be able to buy. Since I have only been doing this for a short time I have only been able to buy from each once so far. And it wouldn't take much for another CRHer to come in and buy them before I get the chance, in that the bank is not going to favor me over another customer.

In any event, I have found that to buy coins from the coin machine where CRHers to don't dump always has been a great yield. I would pick that over hand rolls or boxes any day of the week.
