I think Sentinel is right on the collar disc WWII Definitely later than WWI The Indian head is a cool find too.

Cant help with an ID but it is sweet and I would be thrilled to have it in my case. :icon_thumright:

Please educate me on how you arrived at the age of the collar device. I am not questioning your appraisal, just want to know how to tell the difference. Thanks, Fyr.

As far as I know all WWI collar discs are thick and have a threaded stud on the back. I've dug a couple I thought were large cents when I first saw them in the dirt.
The one posted may actually be later than WWII but I'm sure it is not older than that.

You're asking a Georgia Boy to trust a Yank? :o I'd just as soon put sugar on my grits! :laughing7: I know Va knows his stuff, that is why I ask him to enlighten me.

If it helps. I'm only half yank. My dad's folks are from Winchester VA. My mom's folks are from upper MD and lower PA. I was born in Gettysburg but raised in VA. I hope this info helps. ;D

You're a Mutt just like me. My Dad's family is from Hagerstown, Md. and Mom's are from Luray, Va. I was born and raised in Hagerstown, moved down here in 1973 after getting out of the Navy. I have a civil war ancestor buried at Andersonville. He died there in March 1864 of diahrea.

Man that is wild. Have you ever heard of Harney MD or Littlestown PA? My mom is from Harney and I have relatives that live there and Littlestown and some in Westminster MD.

IIRC Harney is near Emmitsburg. Never did make it over that way. I enlisted in the Navy and left in the fall of 1968. Never went back except on vacations. I do llike that part of the country better than where I am but don't like all the prople.

Yep it is near Emmitsburg but I'm not sure how close. My grandmother told me that her mother said there was a group of southern gentlemen that camped in piece of woods near Harney just before the battle of Gettysburg. Of cours I had to check it out. I had my old Metrotech then and dug a Zouave button, a canteen spount and a large cent and a ton of coins from the 1880's to 1900's as the church held revival meetings there. the next time we went up I was ready to go back and try it again. I got to the wood only to see a nice new house setting right in th middle of where I had dug everything :o(

I found a button similar to yours , except mine has crossed cannons , with the letter s under the cannons .
