Today's dumb Explorer SE question

Hey Everybody! :hello:
Here's today's goofy situation. I'm attending the GPAA Vein Mountain dig, and tomorrow we have a detecting "Treasure Hunt". I believe we will mostly be hunting for tokens to be traded in for prizes, but I'm not sure. (Anyone who has done one of the before, please chime in!) My Safari w/ the pro coil doesn't arrive until Tuesday, so I'll be using the Explorer SE w/ the 1050 stock coil (I wanted to try the pro coil that comes w/ the Safari before buying one for the SE). While learning the SE which I've only had a couple weeks, I found it easier to learn the changes from a concentric to a DD coil with the 5" Excelerator EQ2 Pro coil. SO, what should I hunt with tomorrow? The 10.5" coil will cover more ground, but the 5" will pinpoint quicker and I'm better at identifying targets with it. ???
Ideas, opinions and strategies are most welcome! Thanks!!! ;D

Re: Today's dumb Explorer SE question

I've never been to an organized hunt but I bet it would be a fun experience.

I have an E-trac but the same principles should apply to your SE...If you are expecting most targets to be under 6" in depth then you can turn your sens down so you will get more stable operation and more accurate target id's. Also, by lowering sens you will be ignoring deeper objects.

Chances are if it is a "seeded" hunt, then most targets will not be buried deep and the usual maxed out settings will not be needed. As for which coil to use, I would say whichever one you can pinpoint better with. The faster you pinpoint and recover the target the better so you can move on to the next signal.

Hope this helps and maybe someone with more experience in this area will chime in...GoodLuck and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the advice RigDean. ;D
I've been told that there will be silver coins along with the tokens, so I'm playing with silver test coins to add to the user discrimination settings. I hadn't thought about dropping the sensitivity which makes perfect sense. The hunt will be fun no matter how well I do.

Is this taking place in dry sand? If so....

Use the stock coil because you need the coverage because the hunt will be over before you know it and you want to cover ground. How you retrieve the target is what's important and something like a large hand held sand scoop will make up for the lack of pinpointing. You might have some open space because the one I was on my explorer seems to drive several other detectors crazy. The looks one lady gave me I thought I was going to get wacked with a Tesoro. ;D

LOL Ironpatch, you gotta love FBS! I wonder if her warranty would cover THAT! :laughing7:

Re: Today's dumb Explorer SE question

In the end I went w/ the stock coil. Targets were all modern coins spray-painted green along w/ nuts, bolts and brass pieces also painted green. We had 20 minutes to hunt, and points were given for each type of target. I was worried about lack of experience w/ my new explorer, but I did fine and came in 6th out of 28 people. The ironic part is that I wasted a bit of time digging LAST YEAR'S unfound coins which only counted 1/2 point. ;D Needless to say, I'm feeling a bit more confident and can't wait to get out & hunt this week. Thanks to everyone for the help & advice.
IP - Another Explorer user & I actually managed to get a little extra "elbow room" by noise cancelling and warning others our machines might interfere with theirs (the hosts had just finished warning everyone not to use a PI unit). :laughing7:
