Went out for a early morning relic hunt and took Greg the relic hunter with me. I got 5 minies and an eagle button, but Greg got the prize, we think...problem is, we dont know what the heck it is! it's big, black leather remaining, brass adornments, iron. The area around it produced minies, the eagle button and it was deep and in two parts. Any ideas?

I think saddle parts, maybe a brass horn with a brass tie down or carbine boot attached.

Tou should pay great attention to the area where the patially melted minnie came from. Its most likley a firepit or hut ! you can digh it outand it could be full of goodies. The powder from the load would have been used to start the fire and the bullet left to melt

Really nice stuff!! You found some great relics.
I would contact "The Horse Soldier" in Gettysburg. They are really good at ID'ing odd or incomplete items. You might have something they would be interested in.

saddle parts from the looks of it --calvary soldier not going anywhere without it ??? odd

was a picket cavalry soldier surprized - taken prisoner / shot- killed maybe?

I have dug those,it not part of a saddle per se,but from the harness apperatus for a carriage. It would "ride",in the same location as a saddle.

I dont know about anybody else but that hook is not in a very good spot for a rider ??? :laughing7:

If you mean the right one, its a fired & impacted bullet :icon_scratch: (had loads of them behind a range)

Here is mine

Not that it matters but I think James is right. Melted. No rifling grooves and the rings arent compressed at all.
