Today's Civil War Finds & CW Mysteries + STRANGE coin disk

Hey Ya'll, Today I worked an area where a Southern mansion/plantation house was once built. The top row I knew immediately what they were, but the bottom row is a total mystery, plus there is a super strange coin/disk. From Left to Right: CW Sword/Knapsack Rivet, CW Knapsack Ring, 2 Harmonica blades, Bennington Clay Marble, CW Flat Button with GREAT patina, and a CW metal button. Bottom Row Mysteries: #1 This coin or disk is completely smooth; there is absolutely no trace of anything embossed on it. It has a nice red patina. I'm assumingn it is brass or copper. #2 This looks like a Wax Seal to me. It is made of Lead and is complete, and not broken off of anything else. The foot looking thingie is off-set from the bottom base. #3 This cog looking piece could be a Spur Rowel, but not sure. It is fairly thick, and not bendable at all. It was in the same hole as the Lead Foot/Seal thing, and the last item showing. The Bennington marble also came out of this hole. #4 This dome shaped item is thin and bendable and was next to the cog thingie. Any help on ID-ing would be appreciated. Thanks, Breezie

Hello neighbor in NC. It looks like were finding the same types of what is its. How are you sure the button is CW? I'm just curious. HHHH

The copper coin looking item may be a half penny. the bendy item might be a rossette for a water faucet.

The top button with the great green patina is called a flat or coin button, and was worn by both soldiers and civilians. These flat coin buttons were especially found in Confederate camps . .remember, we were the poor folks. Some of the CSA soldiers even had 'flower' buttons on their uniform. The 2nd button may or may not have been used during the CW, but since it was almost in the same hole, and judging by the other CW items, I would say yes. ;D Breezie

I think you are right .. an escutcheon from a drop pull, similar to this ... The gear looking thing may be a clock gear

BINGO . . I think we've found a winner on the Escutcheon plate. :hello2: Kudos on the photoshop too! Now, what do you make of the lead piece? I've googled Antique Wax Seals, but none look like this one.

I don't think the cog is for a clock because the teeth are at an angle, not straight out like clock gears, unless there are some with off-set 'toothies.' Breezie

I think it is some sort of pull, sort of like a window lift, but I don't know. I don't think it is a seal, though.... NO .. WAIT .. I THINK I FOUND IT!!

Re: Today's Civil War Finds & CW Mysteries + STRANGE coin disk

Breeze, I think your "bendy thing" is far too thin a metal for an eschotcheon plate, but is more likely hardware for a lamp or plumbing fixture. The lead relic seems unlikely for a seal (another hobby of mine is early postal history, and a seal would have some design, grid work, border, etc., but almost never would be just pressed flat with no feature at all). Could it possibly be a game piece of some kind? The disk, although it shows no design, is thick and doesn't seem to show the kind of wear one finds on worn large cents or British coppers (the edges on yours are too crisp also). Occasionally we find plain planchets, but to identify this you must supply mesurements and weight. As to the gear, I agree with others that this is a clock's escapement gear. Does your flat button have a backmark? If so, it can possibly be identified as C.S. by maker's mark, as flats manufactured for use by the Conferate states are well documented in Tice. otherwise it is likely this button may be pre-Civil War (and possibly used during the C.W.). .

I think the flat disc is a worn shield nickel. I have found some before that were totally smooth. Place a nickel on top of it, and if it is the same size that's what it is. You could also run it under an Ace 250, XLT, DFX, or other ID machine to see if it rings up as a nickel--the reddish coloration of it is the same as all the old nickels I dig here.

Re: SOLVED!Today's Civil War Finds & CW Mysteries + STRANGE coin disk

Thanks to all who help answer the questons. I'm satified the Lead pieces are Game Pieces, probably 'mammy made,' well, in this case, 'pappy made,' because I found 2 more of them today. I'm also agree the disk is a V-Nickel and the cog is a watch part.

I found more goodies today, and will start a new post. :) Breezie

I was looking and studying CW spurs and parts and saw this piece (below) which resembles the "mystery disk " slightly... Who knows? Just saying HHHH

That's actually a colonial era find--a childrens' toy called a "spinner" or "whizzer." It is mis-identified on the link you posted.

Best Wishes,
