Got 18 rolls of nickels today at the bank, thats 720 nickels, out of these 12 were made before 1960. Heres what i got:

1957 D
1957
1941
1953 D
1958 D
1957
1948
1947
1959 D
1946
1946
1946

Also alot of commemerative canadian nickels and other varieties including S mint marks. gotta still check them for rare varieties.

so the rate for finding a pre 1960 nickel for this bank is 1 old one per 60 new ones :) not bad....alot of in really good condition too.

Cool, Jake! ?Last week i got 2 well worn 1940's nickels in my change from the Quick Trip. ?Somebody must have cashed in on their stash, or someone elses... ?Keep up the searching!

Good deal Jake,,, WTG!!!
That sounds like something to keep ya busy over the winter, and ya never know what ya might find... ;D
Good luck & Happy hunting~

I got 18 rolls of nickels to go thru them and find older coins or rare varieties. In one roll of nickels i got 3 1946 nickels. Also got alot of 1970 S nickels and one 1969 S nickel. ?

When I was a kid (in the 1970's), I would read in the coin magazines of guys buying rolls of dollars and halves and getting huge amounts of silver, some AU or nearly MS with key dates. I tried the same thing but all I could afford in 7th grade was cent and nickel rolls. I have often thought of doing it again with the larger coins that came in silver, but go to old banks in small towns that have been there forever. Maybe they didn't rotate out some old rolls and you will strike it rich?

I heard that the new buffs are being recalled . Anyone else here this rumor? I'm new to MDing and I love to read your post. HH GEORGE

Jake I like to do that often as well. Some people call it Cherry Picking. I call it something to do when I'm Bored!! I have came across a steel penny that way, found a penny blank, and also found a penny that some of the words are missing. I understand it to be what they call a filled planchet. I may take a pic and send it to a coin mag. The motto "In God We Trust", you can only see We Trust...HH Art...

what year is it? alot of filled dies are well known and have quite a market for them. another one to look out for is the 1964-d nickel and on the back the B in e pluribus unum is a D (e pluriDus unum). and of course doubled dies.

Nice finds! I want to do that sometime--get a bunch of rolls of pennies, quarters, etc, and look for rare ones. Then exchange them for more...

I have a question though. The modern nickel started in 1938 and is still out--with the exceptions of scarce dates, war-time alloys, and those from the past couple of years. So were the 1938's, etc, made of the same materials as now? In 1965 they started making quarters and dimes out of non-silver metals...just wondering what the deal is! Thanks, and again, good finds! :D

Great finds. I'm sure people roll their coins take them to the bank, and the bank might un-roll some of them to use, but I dought all of them. Some people just don't check their coins they roll. They are losing out, but we are gaining. I have gotten some nice coins in bank rolls. Congrats on your finds.

Good idea Jake.I'll have to try this sometime. :)Ever tried it with dime rolls?I'm sure the ratio would be less but i'll bet there's still some nice silver rosies still hiding in circulation.I've plucked 4 or 5 out of my regular pocket change over the last year or so. H.H.-diggummup

The ratio of old dimes is EXTREMELY low :-\ I have got over 200 dollars worth of dimes and got not one silver one. In fact i have only found one silver dime in circulation and it was in a change jar at my relatives house. Heres what i think the order is in terms of sucess (starting with the most successful) Nickels, pennies, halfs, dimes, quarters. just from my experience, your banks may have more older stuff though.

I haven't tried it with bank rolls yet, only pocket change which I save up in a jug.Your right though,i've found that it's nickels, pennies, dimes quarters then halves in that order.I've only found 1 silver quarter and no silver halves. :) take care-diggummup
