Todays adventure leads to CCFPP & Bomb squad on site.

Well everyone, I came across something I never would've imagined around my neck of the woods. I revisited a spot where I came across a geocache last year to see if anyone had left anything in it or signed it. I didn't find the geocache, I think the good 'ole River took it away with the floods, but I did find something else. I took a picture of it with my phone, and went home and started researching some stuff on the internet about it. Had to run some errands, and on the way back home I couldn't stop thinking about it possibly being the real thing and some kid stumbling upon it and doing himself or others some serious harm, so I stopped by the local police station. They didn't want anything to do with it since it was in the CCFP, so they asked me to wait for him to come to the station. After arriving, he asked me to ride with him to take him to the spot. Upon arriving, he examined it, called his Commander and confirmed it was real. The bomb squad was called and we waited for them to come. After they arrived, the Bomb Squad "guy" asked me to lead the way..... I said, "Uhm, you want me to lead the way, I can point you in the direction where it is, and maybe I can walk behind you... " Well, we walked up to it, he examined it, picked it up, secured it and confirmed it's an authentic real live grenade. He said it will be X-rayed, put away in one of their bunkers, and eventually detonated in a safe place. So, I had quite the interesting day today. I'm glad I didn't kick it to check if it was real. So I can sleep well tonight without this being on my mind. The authorities were quite thankful of my actions and reporting it. They hadn't seen anything like this in our area before, so when they got the call, they really didn't know what to expect.

Wow, yeah, I would have been concerned too. Cool find though... Would have been nice if you could have gotten it defused to add to your collection of finds!

Wow, what an awesome find! I remember finding those very quite often when I was in Afghanistan with my Mine Detector. So did you happen to figure out any history on it, or where it could have possibly came from. To me, it looks like a Russian Frag Grenade from the 70's to late 80's era. Who knows though??? Once again, awesome find, and HH!

What color was the metal part that flies off when you throw it? If it was blue, it was a practice grenade (also would have had a hole in the bottom and be hollowed out)...If it was red, green, or Gray...It was real!

HH,

That's crazy man!! Looks like a WWII era pineapple grenade but I could be wrong. If it is Russian they can be especially dangerous as the fuses have different detonation times. Good call calling it in too, you may very well have prevented a tragic event. UXO (unexploded ordinance) is extremely dangerous and should NEVER be touched or disturbed in any way other than by a professional for disposal...End of public service message.

Re: Todays adventure leads to CCFPP & Bomb squad on site.

It's awesome to see a find like this through my eyes... This is exactly the kind of things that I was looking for in Afghanistan. UXO's, IED's, ETC... Glad to hear you made a smart decision with calling it in. It sure didn't look like any type of practice grenade to me GoGoGopher. The only reasoning behind me saying that is because the bottom portion of the grenade was enclosed rather then open. The military uses bottom opening training frag grenades so the fuse is able to properly ignite without causing damage to anyone. All in all it's good to hear that it was properly taken care of before anyone else got hold of it.

I see what looks like a hole for the pin, but no pin. Might have been a dud the first time around. May not be the next time. Good call getting the bomb squad out there. That's a job I wouldn't want to have.

I see what you mean, the spoon is longer on the ones you posted. For the record, it's the bomb squad but what you said was respectfully mildly entertaining regardless.

Sorry, sometimes i have my problems with writing english... As You see it's the "spoon", it is flat material and longer as well the Fuze. It is more simple in construction. I guess because of the mass production and less use of steel.

No worries, your English is just fine. Yes, I've seen grenades similar to the one posted and the spoon was very light as if made from aluminum.

No the pin is in. I have a drilled out grenade that looks just like this one. The hole you see is not the pin hole.
