Wish I could find a pic for you of the machines they use up here to cut back the snowbanks. They only come out in really really snowy winters and we haven't had any of those in a few years but when you have a bad one the snow banks get so high regular snow plows cant get anymore snow on them, the mail carriers can't get to mail boxes and roads get too narrow. These machines cut four or five feet into the highest snowbanks and suck the snow into dump trucks. They are a marvel to watch. Sounds like you guys could make use of that kind of equipment this week.

We're not "quite" to that point here yet, but if the winter thus far truly is a prelude of what's to come, we'll probably need them!

Hey Susan, here's a few pics I've found online. Let us know which looks closest to what you have in mind:

#E with a dump truck following looks like it to me, Kcm

I heard something a long time ago - don't know if it was an experimental idea or what - but seems I read or heard years ago about a machine that melted the snow into water, and then the water simply went down the storm drains. No hauling or dumping. Seems that could be a good idea, but would sure require lots of fuel to generate that much heat!

I would think our storm drains are frozen during our winters. We had big rains a couple weeks ago and lots of flooded roads because the water couldn't get down drains.

I dunno - storm drains can go down quite far into the ground, where heat from lower ground can help keep it thawed - or at least not quite as hard-frozen. Up here by the Canadian border, not unusual for the ground to freeze up to 9' down. Fortunately though, this is a high water area, so the ground doesn't usually get frozen that far down, as it takes more to freeze the water deep down than the soil.

I also remember seeing something online a couple years back about some larger cities that were beginning to melt their snow in lieu if hauling it to one or more dump sites. Dang, I wish my memory worked better!! However in this instance, it seems that the snow was hauled to central locations and would then dump their loads of snow onto metal grates, then the snow would drop down and be melted. Don't know where it went from there - maybe into the storm drainage system?

Nice coin from The Netherlands.....can you see the year?

Gee, thanks Dave. I had forgotten there was a coin with this thread! :tongue3: :BangHead:

I cant see a date thanks for asking any ideas on how to clean it better

I don't think cleaning it will reveal the date...looks too worn, probably teens to the 1920's.
The date would be 19 on the left, and the year on the right if the 5c

It was really covered in crud when i found it almost tossed it in the trash

Put crud and dirty coins in warm water with soap water for an hour, then clean with a clean cloth.

Today, it is cold, and we got hit with a big snow storm yesterday in Connecticut. Be out in April or May. Good hunting and good luck.

We'll be getting more snow Monday night into Tuesday. Two days ago, it was supposed to be a trace to maybe a 1/2". Yesterday they upped it to 1-3". Now they're saying 3-6". ...We'll probably get about 4'!! :laughing7:
