Today I did some plowin'.

I went out to the site early this afternoon to spend a little time knockin' down weeds and, to make a along story short, I ended up filling the garden water tank too. After the chores were done I walked for about half an hour. I spotted the point almost right away and it was "this can't be". Actually I was a little hesitant to pick it up cause, well, you all know why. Oh yeah, not this time. A few scrapers too.

tchaire, i am quite sure that the point is heavily patinated KRF
i like the red tool on the upper left......we were thinking it is a graver tool

Nice! I found one like that but smaller earlier this year. I think I have a pic of it on my phone...

Thank to all for looking.

Tchaire, yes, I think what Steve said about it being "heavily patinated KRF" is right. The patination is so heavy that it's hard to tell, but I think it's the light brown KRF. In photos. 2 & 5 there's a little chip on the left tang where you can kind of see it.

Steve, I almost threw that little red one back but after looking at it closely I saw the work around the graver spurs. I think there are 2 spurs.

Those are some great pieces, What kind of material is the graver made from anyone have any idea's ? It's a nice color. The point is really a nice one, it sure is patinated a fantastic point.

lets have a look, ok coteau?
did you find it in north dakota?

Here it is, yep found in ND. It's heavily patinated like twitko's but a little smaller. It is one of the nicer points I found so far this year. I would post more of my finds and with a better camera, but I'm kinda lazy lol.

we are questioning the type of these points.....they don't quite look like pelican lake....
...but they look like a cross transition of a prairie side notch with a touch of pelican
a lot of the prairie side notch have a bit narrower notch
and the pelican have a bit more corner notch and slightly narrower........maybe these are a hybrid?

got any ideas???....T Witko and myself would like some opinions

I think the smaller corner notch points are Early Plains Woodland types (arrowheads) and not older Archaic Pelican Lakes (dart points). The confusing thing is I find the smaller corner notch and classic Pelican Lakes at the same sites. I suppose the sites are multicomponent but without dated context you can't be sure. At the Naze site in southeastern ND, small corner notch points similar to Pelican Lakes were found and dated to the Early Plains Woodland period (about 2500 years old).

I think it is safe to assume that small corner notch points that look similar to Pelican Lakes are about 2500 years old give or take and that classic larger Pelican Lakes with oval cross-sections, parallel and diagonal flaking, ground bases, etc. are older.

Thanks coteau, I have a heck of a time trying to identify points but what you said makes sense. I agree about about the confusion with finding different types at the same site as it is at the site we hunt as well.

My guess is a Late Plains Corner Notch. Similar to Hawken or Bitterroot type. Also somewhat similar to a Besant type. Also, Very nice finds! In photo #6, that first artifact, it sure looks like a burin or graver. You sure find a lot of the smaller thumb scrapers. Good Luck Hunting!

Very cool! I have some chunks of jasper that look exactly like the far right peice on the bottom two pics....I wonder if they could have come from the same place?!?

The piece you asked about is, as Steve said, is KRF. This has some patination (the white stuff) around the edge on top on the bottom.Without the patination KRF is a variety of shades of brown and translucent.

Thanks for looking.
