I don't know whether to be excited or upset at this small find.

I decided to take a quick trip down to my neighbor's place and finish both sides of his house. I had already searched both sides with the Vanquish 540 in Relic Mode just to see what Tones and TIDs I would get.

Next, I put the 540 in Coin Mode and away I went. I found more nails but, no jewelry. Out of everything I did find, this small little Tack was a real head scratcher :icon_scratch:. I couldn't find it and it kept my Handheld Pinpointer going nuts.

Finally, I got down to 9 1/2 inches and my Pinpointer was beeping like crazy. I grabbed a huge handful of dirt and tossed in onto my towel then preceded to search for the elusive target. It doesn't bother me at all to tell you that it took a good 5 minutes to locate the target. I about fell over when I did find it. This thing was giving a very solid 20 / 21 TID. I was sure I had a Dime.

Here is the picture (dime for size comparison):

Almost 10 inches and ringing loud like a Dime close to the surface! :dontknow:

Stay safe everyone!

Well done! Most if not all will false on a nail, especially if it is orientated in the ground with head up. :BangHead:

Thanks!

Yup, and I have no idea which way it was oriented, heck, I couldn't even see it at that depth. It was way too dark with all that "almost" black dirt.

I'm slowly figuring out how the Vanquish 540 works and acts in different soil. The quick All Metal Mode button is great when you are in doubt about the target. I also figured out that the automatic noise reduction works when paying attention to how you turn the machine on - simply have to hold it off the ground about 2 inches when turning it on. I have noticed that this helps especially when you have your sensitivity turned up past the half-way point. However, too high will always be noisy no matter what you do.

Take care!

Here's all I found at the Old Park I frequent - Last half of the day today...

I hate having to rush to beat the incoming rain. It just doesn't leave anytime for systematic detecting. As I mentioned in a Post yesterday, I have been forced out onto the Ball field due to Park renovation - trouble is they are renovating this park every 3 years and piling up the dirt to be hauled off (sometimes before I can get to the pile and check it out.

I called the Supervisor of the Parks District and did get permission to hunt the dirt but, there is a huge pile of it and my back won't allow me to climb upon top of it. Therefore, I am going to bring a steel rake and get as much as I can. I only have 8 days to get it done and then, "poof", the dirt gets hauled away. I know the dozer operator and I can buy him a 12 pack of his favorite adult beverage and he will move some of it around for me. Keeping my fingers crossed for some goodies!

Oh, I try to lightly clean my coin finds so as not to remove any of the patina. Only exception is if the coin is trashed and needs some tender lovin' care. The shop I take my extra coins to likes them this way. I suppose times do change as I would of never thought that years ago. Guess he would rather clean them up than have me make a mess out of them; possibly ruining them.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers.

There you go. Nice finds. A small trash day is good. :icon_thumright:

Thanks!

I picked this Tack out of the other 15 pieces of Iron I found because it was the smallest and the deepest.

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief that the 540 smoked this find like it was much larger.
