Found this today. Looks to be a tobacco tin? It's a small box with "Vest Pocket Cut" on one side and "Patented 23-97 Made in U.S.A." on the other. The container was empty and the inside walls look to have a few layers.

That's a nice find! Why don't you clean it up and post another pic? No idea what it is though.

It looks like a collapsible / expandable drinking cup.

You know what, I think you are right. "Cut" looks more like "Cup" on the cover. I'll take another pic.

Tried to extend the cup. Too much dirt. Amazing that's what this is, though!

I think it's 1897 pat. date and a good find. Put it in warm dish soap water and clean it up. Keep it.
I'm not sure if you dare take it apart, might not get them back together.

Im shooting for more early 20th century... 1910-1920? Could be late 19th century though, hard to say without seeing/touching it. Maybe you can find more engraving on the artifact, i do see "Made in US" anyhow great find, keep hitting that outhouse area..

The patent is Jun 23, 1897 but I can pull it up on the Google Patent database.

i was paying more attention to the photo and totally didnt see you posted "Vest Pocket Cut" on one side ... that right there says it all should be pretty simple to get a ID via Google. Cool artifact.8-)

Not really. "Vest Pocket Cut" has no hits outside of the original TN post. One letter off on Google usually wont get it.

It cant possibly be late 19th century. The patent date is 97. (1897) Patents were good for 17 years. So it was manufactured 1897-1913 approx so your first guess is about right.
