Two similar iron objects found over a mile apart on a CW battlefield.

I found the first one of these and thought it looked like an iron fuse plug, perhaps to a Confederate shell, but I can't find any record of such a thing. Then over a year later and a mile away, I found another. There were shell fragments nearby in both cases. One end is slightly tapered and there is no threading. Any ideas? Thanks, CannonballGuy. Being from Richmond, are you familiar with Varina Plantation, on the north side of the James River?

I know where it's at, and I've seen it from the I-295 bridge, but I've never visited it, because I don't have permission to relic-hunt there.

So you can see it from the bridge. That's good to know. I plan on taking a trip down there from Alexandria to see it. Thx.
