It is indeed a glove darner. A fairly similar example is illustrated in Rainwater & Frank's Silver Curios in the Home. A Google Image search on "glove darner" should turn up a number of good hits.

Thats correct. Actually my wife has a chatelaine with about 7 or eight different things on it from about 1880 or so. I'm always looking at garage sales for small things like that. They seem to pop up when you least expect them. I gave $3.00 for the darner.
